Small island it maybe but Sri Lanka delivers diverse attractions

Sri Lanka maybe an island small in size but it is big in the diverse attractions it has to offer all visitors. It is hard to believe that so much diversity could in fact be contained in this pearl of the Indian Ocean, but one visit to this paradise island and visitors know the treasures it contains.    

 

Starting with the capital Colombo and its suburbs a visitor can enjoy visiting the National Museum, the National Zoo or enjoy walks in the Vihara Maha Devi Park or along the Galle Face Green and take in the atmosphere.    

 

Venturing out of Colombo, if travelling towards Sri Lanka's hill capital Kandy is the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage which is a sanctuary that is run by the government to support orphaned baby elephants looked after by foster parents. It is possible to feed the baby elephants and watch the elephants take a bath in the picturesque river and get up close and personal with the elephants. The Temple of the Tooth the Dalada Maligawa is a must visit and visitors come away enriched by the experience.    

 

To enjoy a rich cultural experience visit the Kandyan Art Association and Cultural Centre for an hour long event filled with dancing and drumming. Tickets can be bought during the day but it is advisable go well in time so as to get a good seat.  

 

The more adventurous visitors to Sri Lanka can make the pilgrimage and climb the famous Adam's Peak also known locally as Sri Pada, providing they are in the country during the correct climbing season, which is from December to May. The busiest time is usually during January and February. Sri Pada means Sacred Footprint believed by Buddhists to be that of Lord Buddha, while Hindu's believe it to be that of Lord Shiva.     Those looking for more of a culturally and historically rich vacation can travel to Sri Lanka's ancient capitals Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Both the ancient capitals are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and abundant with remains of stupas, temples and royal palaces.    

 

Another UNESCO listed unique attraction is the Sigirya Rock Fortress built in ancient times by the Sri Lankan King Kassapa I. Having obtained the crown forcibly, King Kassapa knowing his brother, the rightful heir would seek revenge, built a rock fortress as protection, upon which was his palace. Sigiriya is home to the famous frescoes, those of maidens, similar to the ones in the Ajanta Caves in India. It also has the famous mirror wall that is reputed to have been so well polished that the King could see his reflection in it.  It is now famous for being partially covered with scribbles and verses done by visitors to the rock.   

 

Not too far from Sigiriya is the Dambulla Cave Temple which is built into a massive rock. This temple has a unique range of statues and religious murals that are a must see.     Sightseeing in Sri Lanka is a journey of growth as the diverse sights and experiences feed your mind and soul and please the senses.
