Like most boys who get involved in coin collecting, my collection started out as an accumulation of Lincoln Cents. They were readily available, and the fact that there had recently been a design change ("Wheaties" were still common, and the Lincoln Memorial Cents were making their way into circulation) made "pennies" interesting. My father carried a Peace Dollar with him everywhere he went, and the simple design burned itself into my mind as an exemplar of beautiful coinage. But it wasn't until I began work on the Coin Collecting Merit Badge in Boy Scouts that I encountered my first Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
I was INSTANTLY hooked!
I'd seen pictures of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in my Blue Book, but it just didn't seem "manly" enough to me to care about a coin featuring (in my words) "some lady in a dress." Besides that, I didn't care for the Eagle on the reverse of the coin. It seemed over-sized, and out of proportion to the rest of the coin. But I was required to have one to complete my "Twentieth Century Type Set," so I went to a Coin Shop with a couple dollars in my hand to make the purchase.
I needed both the Barber Half Dollar and the "Walker." My intent was to buy "slot fillers" to achieve the minimum requirement of having examples of the two types. I told the shop's owner that I needed a Barber Half, and he took a couple out of his case. I chose one, caring more about price than condition.
"What else can I do for you?"
"I need a Walking Liberty Half Dollar, too."
The owner took out a couple low-grade coins, then said that he had some "nicer" coins as well. He pulled out several coins which were in AU (About Uncirculated) condition and my jaw dropped. (It's amazing that I remember the moment vividly 45 years after the fact!) I purchased a "slot-filler," but was so enamored with the Walking Liberty that I actually forgot to pick up the Barber Half Dollar that I had purchased. The shopkeeper had to remind me that I had purchased it.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar replaced the Barber Half Dollar in 1916. Although it was the only half dollar minted during this time, it was produced intermittently until 1947. Adolph Alexander Weinman won a three-way competition to design the coin. (His design was chosen for the new dime as well, but the story of the Mercury Dime will be taken up at another time.)
Like all silver coins of the time, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was made of 90% silver, which makes them a favorite of people who choose to invest in circulated silver coins. The obverse (or "heads" side of the coin) features a representation of Liberty, striding confidently toward the rising sun. The words "Liberty" and "In God We Trust," along with the date the coin was minted, also appear. On the 1916 and some 1917 "Walkers" the Mint Mark (Indicating which US Mint facility produced the coin) appears below the word "Trust" on the Obverse. Some 1917 Walking Liberties and all half dollars produced from 1918 to 1947 have their Mint Marks on the Reverse of the coin to the left of the words, "Half Dollar." An "S" indicates that the coin was made in San Francisco, a "D" indicates it was made in Denver, and coins made in Philadelphia carry no Mint Mark.
The reverse (or "tails" side of the coin also features the phrase "E Pluribus Unum," the words "United States of America," and the initials of designer Weinman.
Among the questions frequently asked about the coin are, "Who modeled for Lady Liberty?" (Audrey Munson--an American model/actress known as "Miss Manhattan" and the "American Venus.") What are the key dates of the Walking Liberty series? (1916, 1921, 1921-D and 1931-D) Don't they still make Walking Liberty coins? (The design of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar is so beloved that it was decided to use it for the one ounce silver bullion coin.)
Is the Walking Liberty America's favorite coin? I'm not sure, but if you attend a coin show you'll almost certainly see them receiving a disproportionately high amount of attention. And when you start wading through the crowd in front of a table of Walkers, call out my name. If I'm not too engrossed in the half dollars in my hand or the dealer's case I'll come over to say, "Hello."
Arthur Haule has been interested in United States Coinage since the mid-1960's when he was given the start of a Lincoln Cent collection by his Grandparents. Believing that coinage is a tremendous representation of History and politics, as well as "fine art in the hands of the common man," due to the wonderful engraving found on coins, he promotes coin collecting every chance he gets. Haule writes for the US Coin Blog as well as editing http://www.squidoo.com/walkinglibertyhalfdollar and many other coin pages on the Squidoo social networking site. When Art isn't examining coins, you can usually find him with his violin and editing the Violin Student Central website, reading U.S. History and Christian apologetics, spending time with his wife, and supporting his daughter's sports teams in the Dallas / Fort Worth metroplex.

The World Market for Dates $325 This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for dates. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for dates for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. |

Daddy Dates $5.99 One day motivational leader Greg Wright realized that the four set of pretty young eyes under his own roof were looking to Dad to be strong, fearless, and wise. The reality was, the lone male in an all-girl household ("heck, even the dog was female") was only thirty years old and felt like he had been shoved into the deep end of the estrogen pool without swimming lessons. That's when the love-struck father of four gorgeous pre-teens started searching for a plan for how to be a successful Dad, and did what any sensible guy would do. He bailed. Not only on his family, but into the woods, to seek a "solution." Daddy Dates is an entertaining and practical look at how one American father found his sea legs and is navigating through the tricky waters of parenting girls. In this game-changing book, Greg shares his easy-to-follow secrets for how married and single dads can go beyond high-fiving to bridge the gender gap and become the clued-in man who knows his daughter best. Dads have more influence on their girls than anyone. Learn what makes your daughter tick, how to talk to her effectively and connect more profoundly, at any age. If being their hero is your mission, it's not impossible. Daddy Dates is your road map to get there. "Hi honey. It's Daddy. I'm calling to see if you'd like to go on a date with me tonight." "Um, yes, Daddy I think I would." It's a phone call Greg Wright has made over and over again. By age thirty, Greg was the overwhelmed father of four beautiful little girls, with one thought running through his mind over and over again: Don't Screw Up. Daddy Dates is about a guy taking his best shot at being a successful dad by trying to know his girls- really know their fears, dreams, and opinions- and how he stumbled across an incredible strategy to do that with daughters of any age or stage. This funny, insightful, and relatable book poses the wildly original concept that should be a "duh" for most dads- but isn't. In order to raise a confident woman-to-be, show your daughter what it feels like to be treated with love, respect, and true interest by a man who loves her. Daddy Dates is not another "how to" book from a parenting expert. It's a personal, eye-opening, often humorous look at an Average Joe's intentional pursuit of his daughter's hearts and minds, and the love-inspired steps he is taking to solidify Dad's place in each of their lives, forever. Whether married or single, Daddy Dates can help you better connect with virtually all of the females in your life. Using Greg's communication cues, you'll be blown away by what you'll learn about your child, and how you can make a powerful, lasting difference- especially during her rocky teenage years. Daddy Dates is about one thing- becoming her hero- one date at a time. |

Bad Dates $13.88 Comedy Character: 1 female Interior Set "And then I realize, in this sort of strange, hallucinatory moment, that the bug guy is looking kind of good, and the things he's saying about bugs are really kind of fascinating and it is then that I realized that maybe it has been too long since I've been on a date."--So confesses a single mother and self-described restaurant idiot-savant in this thoroughly charming and slyly sweet one-woman play by the author of The Butterfly Collection and Spike Heels. This idiosyncratic journey of self-discovery involving the Romanian mob, a Buddhist rainstorm, a teenage daughter, shoes, and a few very bad dates enjoyed an extended run Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons starring Julie White. |
