A brief look at the life of Ted Kennedy
Sen. Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy, scion of the political dynasty that embodied liberal politics for a generation and also one of the most polarizing political figures of his time, died at age 77 after a long battle with brain cancer. For nearly half a century the American media, and the American public, have been obsessed with the Kennedy family
Kennedy died at 11:30 p.m. at his Massachusetts home on Cape Cod after a yearlong battle with a malignant brain tumor. His family was at his side, as was a Catholic priest, Father Patrick Tarrant. Funeral arrangements were pending.
The late Senator will be honored posthumously for his "courageous leadership for peace human rights and nuclear disarmament.
Political figures are said to be remembered in one line. George Washington was the father of his country. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. Ronald Reagan won the Cold War without firing a shot. Ted Kennedy let a woman die at Chappaquiddick and tried to cover it up. If obituaries rightly remember the Massachusetts solon as America's third longest serving senator, they do history a disservice by downplaying why he served so long in the Senate and not a day in the White House.
There was a time 40 years ago, after the assasination of Robert Kennedy, when it semmed that one day, Ted Kennedy would become President by right of succession.
He was 30, the minimum age for serving in the Senate, when he was elected to fill his brother's unexpired term in 1962. But the history of Kennedy family tragedies that had begun with the deaths of his brother Joe and sister Kathleen during and after World War II continued in 1963 with the assassination of John. In 1968 his only surviving brother, Robert, also was assassinated, while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination.
In recent years, however, Kennedy earned a nearly 100 percent negative rating from the National Right to Life Committee and a 100 percent positive rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America for his abortion-related votes in the Senate.

Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy [With 8 CD's] $49.4 In 1964, Jacqueline Kennedy recorded seven historic interviews about her life with John F. Kennedy. Now, for the first time, they can be heard and read in this deluxe, illustrated book and 8-CD set. Shortly after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, with a nation deep in mourning and the world looking on in stunned disbelief, Jacqueline Kennedy found the strength to set aside her own personal grief for the sake of posterity and begin the task of documenting and preserving her husband's legacy. In January of 1964, she and Robert F. Kennedy approved a planned oral-history project that would capture their first-hand accounts of the late President as well as the recollections of those closest to him throughout his extraordinary political career. For the rest of her life, the famously private Jacqueline Kennedy steadfastly refused to discuss her memories of those years, but beginning that March, she fulfilled her obligation to future generations of Americans by sitting down with historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and recording an astonishingly detailed and unvarnished account of her experiences and impressions as the wife and confidante of John F. Kennedy. The tapes of those sessions were then sealed and later deposited in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum upon its completion, in accordance with Mrs. Kennedy's wishes. The resulting eight and a half hours of material comprises a unique and compelling record of a tumultuous era, providing fresh insights on the many significant people and events that shaped JFK's presidency but also shedding new light on the man behind the momentous decisions. Here are JFK's unscripted opinions on a host of revealing subjects, including his thoughts and feelings about his brothers Robert and Ted, and his take on world leaders past and present, giving us perhaps the most informed, genuine, and immediate portrait of John Fitzgerald Kennedy we shall ever have. Mrs. Kennedy's urbane perspective, her candor, and her flashes of wit also give us our clearest glimpse into the active mind of a remarkable First Lady. In conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of President Kennedy's Inauguration, Caroline Kennedy and the Kennedy family are now releasing these beautifully restored recordings on CDs with accompanying transcripts. Introduced and annotated by renowned presidential historian Michael Beschloss, these interviews will add an exciting new dimension to our understanding and appreciation of President Kennedy and his time and make the past come alive through the words and voice of an eloquent eyewitness to history. |

Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died $3.95 In the most inspiring speech of his career, Ted Kennedy once vowed: "For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die." Unlike his martyred brothers, John and Robert, whose lives were cut off before the promise of a better future could be realized, Ted lived long enough to make many promises come true. During a career that spanned an astonishing half-century, he put his imprint on every major piece of progressive legislation-from health care and education to civil rights. There were times during that career-such as after the incident in Chappaquiddick-when Ted seemed to have surrendered to his demons. But there were other times-after one of his inspiring speeches on the floor of the Senate, for example-when he was compared to Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John Calhoun, and other great lawmakers of the past. Indeed, for most of his life, Ted Kennedy played a kaleidoscope of roles-from destructive thrill seeker to constructive lawmaker; from straying husband to devoted father and uncle. In "Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died, " celebrated Kennedy biographer Edward Klein at last reconciles these contradictions, painting a stunningly original, up-to-the-moment portrait of Ted Kennedy and his remarkable late-in-life redemption. Drawing on a vast store of original research and unprecedented access to Ted Kennedy's political associates, friends, and family, Klein takes the reader behind the scenes to reveal many secrets. Among them: - Why Caroline Kennedy, at Ted's urging, aspired to fill the New York Senate vacancy but then suddenly and unexpectedly withdrew her candidacy. - How Ted ended his longest-lasting romantic relationship to marry Victoria Reggie, and the unexpected effect that union had on his personal and political redemption. - What transpired between the parents of Mary Jo Kopechne and Ted Kennedy during two private meetings at Ted's home. - Which feuds are likely to erupt within the Kennedy family in the wake of Ted's demise, and what will become of Ted's fortune and political legacy. "Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died" does not shrink from portraying the erratic side of Ted Kennedy and his former wife, Joan. But both in spirit and tone, it is a compassionate celebration of a complex man who, in the winter of his life, summoned the best in himself to come to the aid of his troubled nation. |

Adopting a wild variety of costumes, wigs, and accents, Kennedy prowled the country conducting such experiments as "Just how much will a guy look past in order to have sex with a beautiful woman?" A hidden camera recorded the fireworks whenever the heavily disguised Kennedy made some poor "civilian's" life temporarily miserable. The series was put together by several of the hands who formerly labored on the cutting-edge comedy weeklies In Living Color and Mad TV. Also known as JKX, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment opened to astonishingly excellent ratings on January 13, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Jamie Kennedy Experiment: Season 01 Season one of The Jamie Kennedy Experiment finds the eponymous star "X"-ing scores of unsuspecting citizens with his wacky hidden-camera pranks and seemingly boundless supply of disguises and characterizations. Among the many stunts and gags perpetrated this season: fake auditions for a dating show and a kids' version of Survivor; Jamie's turn as a mobster hiring help for his pizza place; a spoof of all those "public" wedding proposals in which a girl turns Jamie down in full view of 10,000 basketball spectators; and a location jaunt to Panama City, FL, during spring break. Jamie's characters include woebegone white rapper Blad Gluckman, senile TV jurist Judge Jamie, and vapid advice-show host Virginia Hamm. Guest stars appearing on the 17 Jamie Kennedy Experiments seen during season one include Ahmet Zappa, Bob Saget, Sean Maguire, George Wendt, and James Belushi. ~ Rovi |
