Journey Nickels

On Sunday afternoons in Los Angeles, my wife and I would "go for a drive". We were not going anyplace in particular, just driving around with the radio on and the windows open. Often we ended up on Pacific Coast Highway, sometimes not. We were happy just to be driving!

Had we needed to go to the market or the cleaners or we were trying to get to a movie, it would have been pretty frustrating just driving and not getting where we were going. But on those sunny Sunday afternoons, the point was the driving.

When you go to work, what is the point? Do you know where you are going? Or do you go to work just to go to work?

Most people are unhappy at work because they don't have a goal, they don't know what they are shooting for. They know they don't like the journey too much, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

So how can you be happy at work? Have a goal! Know where you are going. Every day when you get into work, know why you are there, where you are going, and move forward every day!

Both of these great resources will tell you to have goals and review your goals daily. Some experts say to review your goal every morning, some will say to review it three times each day. Some will help you with the best way to word your goals; others say you should do whatever works for you. Some experts have you turn it into an affirmation that you should read to yourself in front of the mirror every morning.

But almost all the experts agree that you should have goals. Now you may not know exactly how you will reach your goal, but Martin Luther King, Jr. told us "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."

You need to know where you are going if you ever want to get there. Otherwise you are like my wife and I when we were just going for a drive.

The other key to being happy is reminding yourself of all the things that you have that you should be happy for. Here is an idea - tomorrow morning when you are in the elevator going up to your office, think of three things you have to be happy for. You may say to yourself "I am so happy that I have a great house." Or "I am so happy that I love my wife so much." Or perhaps you might say "I am so happy that I will be seeing the new movie tonight." Maybe you will say, "I am so happy that I started reading Jack Canfield's new book."

We can all choose to be happy at any point in time. And we all have many things to be happy for. So if we just remind ourselves of all the wonderful things in our life, it is difficult to keep the smile off our face!

So there you have it. The secret to being happy at work - or anywhere! Know where you're going and choose to be happy on the journey.
