A relaxation technique known as Transcendental Meditation may decrease blood pressure and reduce insulin resistance among patients with coronary heart disease, according to a report in the June 12 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
Transcendental Meditation is derived from the ancient Vedic tradition in India, and brought to this country by Mahesh Maharshi Yogi in the 1960's. Previous research has shown that Transcendental Meditation lowers blood pressure but its effects on other risk factors associated with coronary heart disease, including those linked to the metabolic syndrome, has not been thoroughly examined.
The research that has been taking place in the Transcendental Meditation field is being used in corporate business today. The research is funded by grants from the National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine, National Institutes of Health; and General Clinical Research Centers grant from the National Center Research Resources.
In the latest research involving older people (60 and over), a 16-week trial of TM were conducted with patients with coronary heart disease. Fifty-two participants (average age 67.7 years) were instructed in TM and 52 control patients (average age 67.1 years) received the health education. As a metaphysician with high blood pressure and mild insulin resistance, I can control it with prayer and meditation. It's not exactly what the Maharshi prescribed, and my blood pressure and insulin resistance have mellowed. For those of you who keep up with Holistic Health, and these columns I write, you know I speak a great deal about prayer and meditation. Believe me, it works.
The principles of meditation are quite simple, and you are not required to sit on the floor in a lotus position to practice it. I have developed meditation techniques that can help by reducing the amount of stress in your life. We can take the mystique out of the equation. Most people think that meditation is for people in India, China or Japan. There is a Christian principle of meditation. Is this not what Jesus practiced and taught?
What do you think Jesus was doing the 40 days and nights that he went into the mountains to fast and pray? He was meditating. It was following those periods that Jesus came from the Mount of Olives to deliver the great Sermon on the Mount. You are what you think. Jesus taught these truths. By meditating on words that embody your highest ideals, you drive them into your consciousness. There they take root and begin to create wonderful changes in your life-changes you wanted to make, but have not known how to bring it about.
Meditation can improve so many things in Body, Mind and Spirit. It can sharpen concentration, deal effectively with stress, release deep reserves of energy, transform anger, leave behind painful memories and live fully in the present. It helps to develop unsuspected capacities for insight and understanding; learn to live more fully than you thought possible and discover your unique contribution to life. There are many meditation books, tapes and courses available. Choose one that is right for you. You get out of it what you put in, and the same goes for prayer.
Integral medicine is evolving, and it involves things like Transcendental Meditation and other practices to live a full and wholesome life. Take 20 minutes every morning after awaking, and use that time to meditate and pray. Do the same as you lie in the bed trying to attempt sleep? Your sleep will be a sound sleep. You will awaken fresh, and ready to still the mind, slow it down again until you reach that time when your mind is alert to the day's activities.
