In 2005-8, the Freddie Mac-Fannie Mae home-mortgage and financial-industry debacle modernized that scheme to a maestro performance: over-appraised homes, banks pressured (by well-intentioned liberals) to give zero-down payment loans - to over-their-heads-borrowers - with inadequate income - at sub-prime, initially-low-but-later-high-interest-rates - and guaranteed by the US government (by a well-intentioned liberal president); greedy manipulators packaging those known-as- worthless mortages into investment portfolios - bloated FM/FM becoming the largest corporations on planet Earth (holding half of all $13 trillion US mortages; but with "blind", trusting congressional oversight); "suckering" all America: the NYSE, Life Insurance annuities, corporation and union Medical and Pension funds, 401K retirement funds, etc. - eventually causing the collapse of the entire financial world. Has America learned to rationalize away a lack of morality? Is this an unintended consequence of the swing toward "politically-correctness", anti-religion, secular mind-set that now rules our culture - along with more and more unwed teen-age pregnancies - and octuplets?

During the great depression of the mid-thirties, the average working man fed, clothed and housed his family - if he earned $4 or 5 a day; unemployment was three-four times the numbers of today; newspapers, at three cents each, were left on open stalls, to be taken by buyers who left the three cents - and no one stole, either papers or coins!

No one stole because America believed in "Thou Shalt Not Steal!", and morality, and fairness - that one is entitled only to what has been earned - not what one could get away with. There was pride in working hard and fairly - for grades in school, for a win on the ballfield, or at work. What we have today is very different, morally and ethically: opportunism is solicited, unfair advantages grasped, rationalization of failures and of greed is commonplace, unabashedly people demand government hand-outs - and blatant theft is shrugged-off?

Seventy years ago, being a boy scout didn't only mean you helped an old lady cross a street, it meant you played by the rules, you didn't accept what you hadn't earned, what you weren't entitled to; one didn't cheat, not in school, not on the ball-field or in business; whether it was a safe-on-first play, or a letter grade in school (and kids flunked if they couldn't do the work), or a prize, or money. Fiction stories then were about nobility of spirit, of ethics, of falling, then getting up and trying harder; of achieving goals by striving for them. Today, the news is of people grabbing anything they can get, department-store lootings after a natural disaster, benefits not deserved (and that includes some well-intentioned "affirmative action" applications to top schools for limited spots); athletes, using performance-enhancing drugs; a mother and doctor conspiring to achieve celebrity status and fame and fortune by birthing octuplets; shameless CEOs of bankrupt companies taking billions in public monies after the mismanagement of their companies - then giving themselves huge bonuses; throwing parties for their special people with government bail-out money; most every politician on the pay-to-play band-wagon. Today, the media is full of such stories.

While middle America still believes - quietly - in "Thou Shalt Not Steal" and in morality - perhaps what we see are the unintended consequences of where the leaders of western society have taken our culture - demeaning religion or faith in God as childish and rationalizing away morality and ethics. There seems to be no shame when CEOs who greedily bankrupted their companies, still grant themselves millions in bonuses; or with bailout funds socked away, financially-bust companies throw lavish parties for company officers and customers; when state and city officials make trade-offs of excessive salaries and benefits to Union employees for re-election votes; when Obama's "bail-out" bills are larded with"earmarks" to pay-off special interests; the universal attitude seems to be that everyone is entitled to everything; no more "Ten Commandment", or morality, or fairness, or get-only what-one-deserves, not everything one can get away with - and no one has any shame: the behavior of leaders in industry, government, sports, entertainment, our entire culture - is clearly without restraint - rationalized exceptions govern everything.
