Ionian Islands Namely Corfu
It is one of the Ionian Islands which nestle off the West side of the Greek mainland. The island Corfu is thirty six miles long and at its widest part the North fifthteen miles wide.
Covered with over three million evergreen olive trees, watered by winter rains. Even during the hot dry summers remains one of the greenest of the Mediterranean islands.
The North East coast is made up of sheltered rocky coves and shingle beaches offering secluded bays and traditional fishing villages. The North and South offer long sweeping sandy bays and the expected commercialism. The craggy west coast, with the high cliffs and horseshoe sandy beaches and spectacular sunsets.
The town Corfu town is Venice and Naples, a touch of France and more than a dash of England, apart of course from being Greek.
Mount Pantokrator dominates the Northern part of the Island and is over one thousand meters high. During the winter months it is occasionally snow capped. There are several villages to stop and see on the way, all well worth a visit.
The Palace is definitely a place to take your camera. This beautiful building in picturesque gardens overlooking the sea and Corfu town is one of Corfus top attractions. It is famous for being the islands most treasured beauty spot, and becomes busy with day trippers throughout the season. Luxury yachts sail in to admire the back drop of the beautiful green hills, while coaches clog up the narrow roads leading into town.
Attractions by the coast include searching for quiet rocky coves or untouched sandy beaches. Inland a network of twisting roads service local villages that seem totally untouched by tourism. Stop and explore and meet the warm and friendly Corfu people. Discover deserted villages such as Old Sinies and Perithia with sheep and goats being the only residents.
Relax by the pool, or search for secret coves that can only be reached by motor boat. With sparkling waters, and beachside taverns awaiting, Corfu is your stress cure.
Incredibly varied, the island has something to offer everyone, and judging by the number of visitors who return year after year, a great deal to offer to many.
Discover a Greek holiday is all about eating. Meals are to be lingered over, try a selection of starters, main courses of fresh locally caught fish and tender meats, organically grown salads garnished with herbs and home pressed olive oil. Greek wines are also well worth trying. As well as the traditional village wines there has been real progress in Greek wine production and superb choices are available
