Though there are many different specialty saddles, when choosing a saddle, there are only two distinct groups - the English Saddle - originated and used in most English specking countries (besides America) and the Western Saddle, which is used in the Americas.
The English saddle includes the Jumping, Dressage, Close Contact, treeless Endurance and the Australian Saddle - which owe its roots to the English, but has a definite Western or Spanish flair.
The Western saddle owes its roots to the Spanish vaqueros (cowboy) - the early cattle herders of Mexico and the American Southwest. This saddle was developed for working cattle over huge areas and were the marriage of the main styles of saddles popular at that time, the Moorish style which granted great freedom of movement to the horse; and the Jousting Saddle, which provided safety for the rider without sacrificing control over the horse.
This combination was very beneficial to the cowboys of Mexico, and the American Southwest. The very functional saddle "horn" was added and can be seen on the Australian saddles as well which is used when lassoing and from just a personal observation, makes getting into the saddle a whole lot easier.
The Western Saddle is very distinctive with its horn - rather than a pommel and it's peak on the front. These saddles have a high cantle thus producing a seat which is deeper than an English saddle and is much more comfortable when ridden in for many hours. The design and purpose of the western saddle was for a working tool for cowboys, who spent all day, every day, on horseback. The western saddle skirt and elongated stirrups are distinctive as are the wide fenders, which are often quite ornate.
The English Saddles on the other hand were designed expressly to provide the horse with freedom of movement, and the ability to move unencumbered through rugged terrain. Unlike the Western or Australian saddle, the English saddle, has no noticeable peak and/or horn, and the front is known as the pommel.
An English saddle tree is usually built of thin sheets of wood, strengthened with metal at appropriate stress areas. And though they have some give, they have only a minimum amount of flexibility. English saddles are much lighter and more simplistic in style with a flatter seat than their western counterparts.
The tree is then covered with leather to create the seat, flaps and panels. Traditionally, the panels of the saddle were stuffed with wool fleece, though today, synthetic materials are used on less expensive saddles, and one company is working to design panels which are inflatable.
But no matter what type saddle you plan to use, it is the saddle fit that should concern you. A poorly fitted saddle will result in saddle sores for your horse (and perhaps you) and a general dislike for riding or being ridden.
