Microscopes are extremely costly - and everything on it is expensive. Regardless of its name - e.g. polarized light microscope, metallurgical microscope (in Toronto or anywhere in Canada), fluorescent microscope (in Toronto or elsewhere) - it carries with it the importance of being handled properly.
Here are some tips in handling your microscopes:
1. Firmly hold the microscope, like your polarized light microscope, by the stand or the base.
The proper way of holding a microscope, especially when carrying it, is having one hand under the base and the other hand holding the arm. Never ever grab your polarized light microscope by the eyepiece holder.
While industrial microscopes are more sturdy that student microscopes and others that are used in the classroom, it is still important to handle the former with care. Once again, regardless of its kind or its name, any microscope costs fortunes.
2. Make it a habit to turn off the illuminator, when not in use.
Microscopes, especially compound microscopes, need an illumination system. This system acts as the light source of the microscope. An illuminator is usually mounted on the base and it has a switch for power. When not in use, turn it off. Bulbs are expensive and have limited life.
3. Use proper cleaning materials.
First and foremost, you should try your best not to introduce dirt and blemishes into your microscope, like your polarized light microscope. When such a scenario is inevitable, then it's important that you use the proper cleaning materials. Do not use your hand or your shirt when wiping the slides or the lenses. KimWipes are among the most widely used tissues used in cleaning certain parts of your microscopes. Certain parts need particular solvents, so do your research. Remember as well to be very careful with the lenses as over-cleaning can damage them.
4. Never remove a slide when focused under a high powered objective.
After observing a particular specimen on a slide, do not immediately remove it from the stage most especially if it is focused using a high powered objective. Do not immediately use the same resolution at the very instant that you will focus on it. Always make use of a polarized light microscope's low resolution objectives first, then the high resolution.
5. Focus smoothly.
When focusing on a specimen, do it smoothly. Do not try to speed it up. Mind the screws and knobs in your polarized light microscope, for instance. If you feel that there is increased resistance when turning a certain screw, stop. Chances are, you may be turning it on the wrong direction or you have reached its limit.
6. Cover it.
When not in use, make sure that your precious microscope is covered with cloth, its case, or placed in its box. In addition, be certain that it rests on an upright position. By covering your polarized light microscope, for instance, you are ensuring that it will be clean the next time someone uses it. As such, you take away the need to wipe it and blow off dust from it. In effect, you are taking out the possibility of over-cleaning and "mis-cleaning -"both of which are detrimental to the well-being of your microscope.
