There are four types of audits that the IRS conducts and almost always you end up paying additional taxes. Actually that could be the good news because another option open in some audits is jail time. OK now that you are properly psyched, here are the four types.
Types of Tax Audits
The most common audit is the "correspondence audit" and this is simply a letter telling you that the IRS is going to change your return and probably take more money. This is triggered by your return not matching up third party documents, like 1099s, or entire parts of the return being left blank. The best way to handle this is simply correct your return (the IRS will tell you where the problems are) and send it back.
The office audit is where you sit down with your friendly IRS auditor and go over your return. These are usually triggered by your failing the correspondence audit (or simply not responding to it), your failure to file a return or if you are in an all cash business. The areas of interest here are medical expenses, moving expenses, employee expenses and all those other categories where its easy to fudge.
Here's Two More
If you are notified that the IRS is going to do a field audit that means they are going to your home or place of business to review your financial records on site. The auditors assigned to these projects are some of the best they have. Typically people who are self employed and have over $100,000 in income are the targets of these little visits. Also big on the hit list are people with multiple streams of revenue particularly in real estate development.
And of course if you're a crook you would be subject to the Criminal Investigations Division will be paying you a visit. These guys are the A Team of the IRS and they have significantly more resources to them than the rest of the auditors. So if they think you are involved in fraud, abuse of tax laws, illegal tax shelters and the like they will come down hard.
