Travel to Vietnam for a spectacular adventure at any time of the year, or on any budget. Vietnam is full of attractions, from hiking in the north, to shopping in the heart of downtown Ho Chi Minh City. History buffs will be pleased with the numerous historical museums, ancient pagodas, and places of interest from the Vietnam War. Food lovers will find the exotic flavours of Vietnamese cuisine unforgettable. Vietnam travel can be inexpensive for backpackers wanting a long holiday, while those with a midsized budget can find comfortable accommodations and tour packages.
Vietnam travel has become increasingly easy for the traveler in recent years. Booking a plane, train, or bus ticket to get around the country is relatively cheap and simple. Both plane and train tickets can be purchased in advance on the internet. Vietnam offers "open tickets" for the intercity bus system which can be used at anytime between selected dates. Boats can also be cheaply rented for transport in the Mekong Delta and other bay cities.
Northern Vietnam travel destinations include the capital, Hanoi, and the UNESCO World Heritage site at Ha Long Bay. Hanoi offers a wide variety of military and history museums, and Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum is an important landmark. The spectacular, scenic cliffs of Ha Long Bay are an iconic scene from Vietnam that can be reached by taking a bus or plane from Hanoi.
Hue is Central Vietnam's most famous sightseeing destination. Situated on the banks of the 'perfume river,' Hue stands as a pivotal historic city just south of the DMZ. Like Ha Long Bay, Hue is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is populated with tombs, pagodas, and palaces.
Southern Vietnam often takes up the bulk of the Vietnam traveller's holiday. Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is a rapidly developing metropolitan area that offers phenomenal shopping and nightlife. Much like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City is teeming with historical, cultural, and art museums. From here, tours can be booked to the Mekong Delta, or the beaches of the East coast. The Mekong Delta region has white sandy beaches ideal for relaxing, swimming, or fishing. Adventurous tourists can rent a boat to experience the floating market.
Bicycles can be rented in Ho Chi Minh City to be ridden to the east coast beach cities of Nha Trang and Mui Ne. Mui Ne is recommended for its scenic sand dunes, and Nha Trang is considered to have the finest beach in Vietnam.

Spirit in the Cities $15 "In recent decades economic dislocation, immigration, new architecture, and other forces have transformed the physical, social, and even religious landscape of large cities. There gleaming skyscrapers tower over struggling ghettos, abandoned businesses mar upscale shopping areas, and tall-steeple churches sometimes languish where storefront mosques thrive. Exploring the religious significance of this new urban landscape, a group of theologians, members of the Workgroup on Constructive Christian Theology, traveled to select cities and found an exciting, vibrant, and multivoiced religious spirit at work. In these essays five leading American theologians delve deeply into the contemporary spiritual geographies of five cities, capturing, through a mix of personal and historical narrative, political analysis, and theological rumination, a sense of this new sacred space and the spirit aborning there." |

Instant Cities $60.85 A major new volume that explores and assesses the phenomenon of the contemporary metropolis. With building space throughout the world at a premium and environmentally-sound development of tremendous importance to the future of the planet, Instant Cities looks ahead to creative, forward-thinking and possibly fanciful notions of the city such as biospheres, space stations and virtual realities. Touching on the historical context of humanity's earliest settlements in the ancient world, Instant Cities focuses on the development of the concept of the city and how it has been expanded to include sites from shopping malls to prisons, as well as various 'micro' communities within society. Today, over 60 per cent of the worlds' population live in cities which means that it is crucial that we comprehend the urban phenomenon, in order to adapt, develop and plan for the future and to fully understand contemporary society. Instant Cities analyses the current stratospheric rise of the city, looking at global megacities from the first to the third world, such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Broadacre City, Milton Keynes in the UK, Lakewood, CA, Brasilia and its satellite towns, Bangalore, India's Silicon Valley, and Pudong, Shanghai. |

Projected Cities $19.99 In this illuminating and provocative survey, Stephen Barber examines the historical relationship between film and the urban landscape. "Projected Cities" looks with particular focus at the cinema of Europe and Japan, two closely linked cinematic cultures which have been foremost in the use of urban imagery, to reveal elements of culture, architecture and history. By examining this imagery, especially at moments of turmoil and experimentation, the author reveals how cinema has used images of cities to influence our perception of everything from history to the human body, and how cinematic images of cities have been fundamental to the ways in which the city has been imagined, formulated and remembered. The book goes on to assess the impact of media culture on the status of film and cinema spaces, and concludes by considering digital renderings of the modern city. "Projected Cities" will appeal to all readers engaged with the city, film and contemporary culture. |

Cities of the World $52.62 History's most opulent collection of town maps and illustrations "The complete reprint of all 363 color plates from Braun and Hogenberg's survey of town maps, city views, and plans of Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America, with dozens of unusual details, as well as selected extracts from the original text and an in-depth commentary. First published in Cologne 1572-1617. " More than four centuries after the first volume was originally published in Cologne, Braun and Hogenberg's magnificent collection of town map engravings, "Civitates" "orbis terrarum," has been brought back to life with this reprint taken from a rare and superbly preserved original set of six volumes, belonging to the Historische Museum in Frankfurt. Produced between 1572 and 1617 - just before the extensive devastation wreaked by the Thirty Years' War - the work contains 564 plans, bird's-eye views, and map views of all major cities in Europe, plus important cities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Edited and annotated by theologian and publisher Georg Braun, and largely engraved by cartographer Franz Hogenberg, the "Civitates" was intended as a companion volume for Abraham Ortelius's 1570 world atlas, "Theatrum orbis terrarum." Over a hundred different artists and cartographers contributed to the sumptuous artwork, which not only shows the towns but also features additional elements, such as figures in local dress, ships, ox-drawn carts, courtroom scenes, and topographical details, that help convey the situation, commercial power, and political importance of the towns they accompany. The "Civitates" gives us a comprehensive view of urban life at the turn of the 17th century. TASCHEN's reprint includes all of the city plates, accompanied by selected extracts from Braun's texts on the history and contemporary significance of each urban center as well as translations of the Latin cartouches. A detailed commentary places each city map in its cartographical and cultural context, and examines earlier sources and later editions. Rounding off this comprehensive publication is a separate introductory essay examining the "Civitates" in its cultural and historical context. From Paris and London to Cairo and Jerusalem, readers will find many a familiar city to zoom back in time to and explore - in fact, many of the maps can still be used for orientation in historical town centers today. |
