People have long been fascinated with learning the identity of their ancestors and with writing family histories. Until quite recently, however, this has been a pretty difficult process, involving trips to distant archives and cemeteries, and spending hours searching through barely legible documents. The internet has changed all of this. Electronic versions of difficult to access public and private records are being made available, and families around the world are publishing information about their ancestors on listservs and genealogy sites.
Thus, I recently discovered that Madonna is my seventh cousin once removed. The seven indicates the number of generations back to our common ancestor, and the single remove indicates that Madonna and I are separated by one generation relative to that common ancestor.
The linkage begins with Jean Baptiste Proulx (1677-1756) and his wife Louise Rousseau (1682-1759), who lived in Quebec, Canada.
I am Jean Baptiste and Louise's sixth great grandson, through their son Joseph, his son Jean Baptiste, his son Joseph, his son Charles, his son Andre, his daughter Marie, and her daughter Claire, to me. It is very common for first names to be repeated from one generation to the next, so great care must be taken in verifying the identity of individuals.
Madonna is this couple's seventh great granddaughter, through Joseph's sister Marie-Veronique, her daughter M. Dandurand, her daughter G. Fortin, her son Francois, his son Nazaire, his son Guillaume, his daughter Elise, and her daughter Madonna Louise Fortin, to Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone. Unfortunately, the available records often only provide initials in place of full names, especially with females.
As it turns out the French Canadian connections in North America are extensive and often surprising. Through my research I also discovered that Angelina Jolie is my ninth cousin twice removed, and the pride of Wasilla, Alaska herself, Sarah Palin, is my twentieth cousin three times removed.
Genealogy is interesting and important. Not only does it give us a sense of where we come from, it also serves as a stark reminder of just how small the world is. We are more closely related to one another than we often want to admit. Why not find out the details.

The Son $3.95 Vivian Carpentier, convinced that men run the world, finds meaning only in erotic love. She envies her son's future and wills to possess it. Troubled by the elusiveness of men, she is barely able to conceal her desperation to entice, her need to be wanted. Struggling to find her place, she takes jobs to bridge desperate intervals between husbands and lovers. She sings in a nightclub, sells dresses, and she nurses her father's friend through his last illness, hoping to atone for a self-centered life. The only constant in Vivian's life is her son, David. Having seen her worst and best moments, her young son provides her with consolation and a reason for living: "In those days of her lover's absence, she grew fascinated with her son's beauty, with the slender shape of his bare feet, with the thick, dark hair with its cast of amber red, with the hard blue of his eyes, with all the particulars of his face, the pliability of his lips." Broaching an ancient taboo deeply embedded in the human psyche, The Son is the haunting story of a woman who sleeps with the bedside lamp lit, waiting for the illumination of self. |

For His Son's Sake $4.99 IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST KITE… From the moment Angus Calder's kite disrupted her beachfront nap, Kenzie Daniels was a goner. And the energetic seven-year old seemed just as smitten…unlike his heart-stopping, coolly conservative dad. Ross Calder obviously didn't want his son growing attached to Kenzie, so why was she still drawn to the vulnerable single father struggling to form a bond with the son he'd never known? The beach vacation was supposed to bring Ross and his unresponsive son closer, yet the free-spirited beauty was the one they were both forming an attachment to. While the levelheaded attorney couldn't deny his attraction, he wouldn't risk his son's heart breaking when they returned home and bid Kenzie goodbye. And Angus's heart was the only one at risk…wasn't it? |
