High Relief

There is no more controversial set of coins minted by the U.S. Mint than the Saint Gaudens Double Eagles. What collectors and admirers see as a beautiful set of gold coins that can prove to be a good investment at the same time are viewed by historians as one way President Theodore Roosevelt single-handedly made his mark on American history. At the turn of the twentieth century, President Roosevelt was bent on making America recognized not as a previous colony but as a world power in itself. There came the age of beautification in America, from its educational system to its government and other important buildings. It was most important to this strong-minded President that America would no longer be viewed as a nation of country bumpkins but as a nation of educated, artistic people.

One way that he knew would send this message across to the countries of the "Old World" in Europe was through their currency. He wasn't satisfied with the coinage at the time, which was considered dull and inferior when compared to the older currencies. President Roosevelt made changing the coinage one of his pet projects, going so far as to find a way to change them without Congressional approval. In his mind, the only person who could design the coins properly was the sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens, one man who was already at loggerheads with the current Mint Engraver Charles Barber on issues of the designs of previous coins. Despite these two swearing publicly never to work together again, the President got his wish and in 1905, Saint Gaudens was busily designing the double eagles for the gold coins. Significantly, this is the only series of coins designed by someone not employed by the U.S. Mint.

Rejection after rejection by Mr. Barber ensured that the coins were not minted until after Saint Gauden's death in 1907. Barber's arguments were justified, though. The coins took at least nine blows to mint in its incredibly high relief, although the second design took just three. Unfortunately, modern currencies took only one blow to mint and these coins would take up too much time and energy to produce in large quantities. A final redesign by Barber produced the lower relief gold coins that are so collectible today.
