Heraclius, Emperor of Byzantium $120.01 This book evaluates the life and empire of the pivotal yet controversial Byzantine emperor Heraclius (ad. 610-641), a contemporary of the Prophet Muhammad. His stormy war-torn reign is critical for understanding the background to fundamental changes in the Balkans and the Middle East, including the emergence of Islam. Heraclius' skills enabled him to capture and recapture important territory, including Jerusalem, Syria and Egypt. Yet, they proved to be of little value when he confronted early Islamic conquests. |

Heraklonas $70.1 Constantinus Heraclius was the son of Heraclius and his niece Martina, and was Byzantine Emperor briefly between February and September 641. He was baptised and officially reigned as Constantinus Heraclius, but the diminutive nickname Heraklonas little Heraclius, became established in Byzantine texts and has become standard in historiography Heraklonas was probably born at Lazica while his father was on campaign against Khosrau II of the Sassanid Empire. He was probably the fourth son of Martina and Herakleios, but the first one born free of physical deformity and eligible for the throne. Towards the end of Heraclius reign he obtained through his mothers influence the title of Augustus on July 4, 638, and after his fathers death was proclaimed joint emperor with his older halfbrother Constantine III Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 102 Publication Date: 2010/08/03 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.02 x 0.24 inches |

Constantine III (Byzantine Emperor) $58.94 Heraclius Novus Constantinus known in English as Constantine III, was the eldest son of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and his first wife Eudocia, and ruled as Emperor for four months in 641. Constantine IIIs birth name was Heraclius Novus Constantinus which was also the official name under which he reigned. The name Constantine became established in later Byzantine texts as short for the emperor and has become standard in modern historiography. In terms of official imperial nomenclature, the style Constantine III would be more appropriate for his son Constans II. Constantine was crowned coemperor by his father on January 22, 613 and shortly after was betrothed to his cousin, Gregoria, a daughter of his fathers first cousin, Nicetas. As the couple were second cousins, the marriage was technically incestuous, but this consideration must have been outweighed by the advantages of the match to the family as a whole. Furthermore, its illegality paled into insignificance beside Heraclius marriage to his niece Martina in the same year Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 68 Publication Date: 2010/07/26 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.16 inches |

ByzantineSassanid War of 602628 $70.1 The ByzantineSassanid War of 602628 was the final and most devastating of the series of wars fought between the Byzantine Empire and the Sassanid Empire. The previous war had ended after Emperor Maurice had helped the Sassanian king Khosrau II regain his throne. When Maurice was murdered by the usurper Phocas, Khosrau II declared war, ostensibly to avenge his benefactors death. The decadeslong conflict was fought in Egypt, the Levant, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and even before the walls of Constantinople itself. While the Persians proved largely successful during the first stages of the war, conquering much of the Levant, Egypt, and even parts of Anatolia, the ascendancy of Heraclius eventually led to the Persians demise. Heraclius campaigns altered the balance, forcing the Persians on the defensive and allowing for the Byzantines to regain momentum. Allied with the Avars, the Persians attempted to take Constantinople, but were defeated there. Heraclius then invaded the Persian heartland, forcing the Persians to sue for peace Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 96 Publication Date: 2010/07/25 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.22 inches |
