The Almost Moon $13.63 Helen Knightly has spent a lifetime trying to win the love of a mother who had none to spare. And as this electrifying novel opens, she steps over a boundary she never dreamt she would even approach. But while her act is almost unconscious, it also seems like the fulfilment of a lifetime's buried desire. Over the next twenty-four hours, her life rushes in at her as she confronts the choices that have brought her to this crossroads. Exhilarating, unforgettable . . . This is a remarkable novel in which every word is vital, each nuance felt . . . Candid, gut-wrenching, at times horribly funny and often beautifully touching . . . The genius which guides The Almost Moon is its absolute, horrible, multiple truths; its staggering clarity' Eileen Battersby, Irish Times As moving as it is unquestionably gripping' Observer As gripping as it is strange and wild . . . My God, it grips . . . I lay awake half the night, feverishly hoping both that it would never end, and that it would all be over soon' Rachel Cooke, Evening Standard |

Almost Paradise $7.99 Fate can be benevolent. Or incredibly cruel. That's what Nick and Jane will learn... Just take their relationship. Nick is stunningly handsome, the blue-eyed scion of a blue-blood New York family. Rich, talented, confident, he will become the world's most famous movie star. From the time they first meet in their Social and Intellectual History of the U.S. course at Brown University, it's love at first sight. Coming together from two very different worlds, they will cast off adversity and disapproval to forge a life filled with work, love, and children. Almost an Evening $11.99 Three satiric plays by Oscar-winning screenwriter Ethan Coen Raising Arizona, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading –the Coen brothers’ films are some of the most critically acclaimed and iconic of our time. Now, one half of the duo, Ethan Coen, adds playwriting to his eclectic bio. In these three short plays that ran to sold-out audiences Off-Broadway in 2008, the theme is hell–both on earth and in the hereafter. In “Waiting,” a man faces an uncertain future in an uncertain location that seems to be some kind of waiting room. The anxiety and despair hark back to dramas of the fifties–Sartre, Beckett, Pinter. “Four Benches” depicts an unlikely meeting in a steam room between a straight-talking Texan and an uptight Brit. Both men learn from the encounter, though only one survives it. In “Debate,” the cantankerous god of the Old Testament roundly abuses the mealymouthed god of the New. His profanity and ill humor receive a startling comeuppance, and further reversals and changes of point of view lead to a denouement that is no more preposterous than anything else in the play. Clever, provocative, and as engaging as the best fiction, these plays showcase yet another talent of one of our most celebrated contemporary writers. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Almost a Farmer $9.99 The author describes his life from primary school years on a farm to becoming a University Lecturer. For two years he travelled 10 km to school by horse and cart and threw stones at rabbits. He also trapped rabbits to sell skins for pocket money, but kept some as pets. A free roaming hawk perched on his shoulder, and an 'owl' came when called for supper. He aimed to be a farmer, but it was not to be. After study at an agricultural college he worked on two farms, but to marry the daughter of the second farmer he wanted an occupation without cows, so joined the South Australian Department of Agriculture advisory service. After a wrong turn on a country road on their honeymoon they were lucky to survive. One and a half years later it was decided he should attend the University of Adelaide and gain qualifications for research. Unfortunately his wife needed six weeks in hospital for repair of a detached retina; without lasers. The book continues with challenges and successes of university life, completion of study in South Australia and travel by ship to attend Reading University in England for a Ph.D. degree. Both universities posed a challenge of existing on a minimal budget, with highlights, unexpected events and stumbles; such as a wheel falling off the car on the way to an exam, a child nearly born premature on the Italian ship, and eviction from a flat for leaving a burnt cake at the landlady's front door. The whole is interwoven with family life and the history of places. |
