Two primary reasons that make a gold coin valuable are scarcity and grade.

Scarcity - Gold dealers prefer to use the term "rare" but the meaning is the same. "Rare" refers to the limited quantity of minted or surviving coins.  These rare coins are always the best purchase for investors.  Coins are constantly certified and authenticated by the PCGS and the NGC-the entities that keep track of the general market value and population of coins.

The rarer a coin is, the higher value it will have, leading to a better investment.  Coins that are more popular such as Maple Leafs, Gold Krugerrands, and American Eagles do not appreciate in value over time because there are lots of them created each year.

Grade - A coin's "grade" refers to the physical appeal of it, meaning how torn up it looks.  Many times, investors will look for coins that have never been circulated, or uncirculated coins.  These are often near perfection in terms of visible wear and tear. 

Even a small nick can devalue a near-perfect coin, so be sure to pay special attention to its grade or have it graded by a professional.

There are some guidelines to use when buying gold coins. Make sure about the weight and purity and recognized internationally with the proper trademark. You can also get a certificate from the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).

As always, there are people out there who are less than truthful. One of the big issues is how to get a good price for your coins when you are ready to sell them. This is where many get fleeced.  The online gold investment communities will alert you to the dealers who are not fair in their dealings with customers.
