Golden Retriever Training - Preventing Puppies Chewing Everything!
A vital aspect of golden retriever training used for puppies has to manage the matter of chewing. Golden retriever puppies are notorious for chewing who, left unsupervised, will chew their way right through everything.
It shouldn't be unexpected really, since a puppy makes use of its mouth to explore its environment. An old sneaker or your favourite patent boots, a moulded plaything or your iPhone, a piece of towel or an expensive outfit; they are not choosy and they will chew if they are bored or during teething or perhaps feeling lonely.
Puppy-proofing your house
Golden retriever puppies, similar to little children, are always exploring. They can be viewed as naturally nosy. Hence you need to keep your possessions well out of the way. Include everything you do not wish going into your pup's mouth – paperbacks, newspapers, mobile phones, apparel, camera, leftovers (in particular chocolate which is toxic for canines) – and more.
Ensure the house is puppy-safe by verifying that domestic cleaning products, trash and all things that may well choke a dog are locked away or definitely out of the way.
Train a golden retriever pup to only chew its own stuff
Puppies can be taught to stop chewing your property, however it necessitates sufficient resolve and dedication for success:
- Begin with prevention. Limit the puppy to a particular place until you become positive she has learned the rules. The more often it gets a chew of contraband stuff, the more she will attempt to replicate this behaviour.
- Have lots of doggy items ready. Accept that puppies need to chew. So buy sufficient toys and provide her a small number at one time to enjoy, varying them periodically to avoid boredom.
- Engage in lots of time in supervision. When she is let outside of her puppy-proofed area, she requires you to guide her as she examines the limits and finds out what is off limits. When you cannot watch your pup, place her in a crate for safety, but please don't leave her shut in for long periods of time as she will soon get bored.
- Prevent misunderstanding at all times. Don't provide old shoes or garments, etc., to play with because she will not know how to appreciate the difference between these and the other ones.
- At times when you catch her chewing, do something immediately. Distract her by making a sudden noise and offer her an alternative toy or chew. At the moment she seizes it, give her lots of praise.
Keep in mind golden retrievers want to give pleasure, but understand that failures are inevitable as your puppy begins to understand the rights and wrongs. Expect it to take patience and repetition as with every part of golden retriever training. The greater amount of time you can dedicate, the faster your puppy will be trained.
