The concept of a handmade watch is still alive today.

The traditional English watch was an exercise in understated elegance befitting the character of the True English Gentleman.

English watchmaking does not have the profile of the Swiss but does have a notable heritage that preceeds the Swiss for hundreds of years.

One of the few craftsmen making their own wristwatches in the tradition Of this Engish heritage is Roger W. Smith. Roger's workshop is located on the Isle Of Man in the Irish sea, home to the famous Isle of Man TT motorcycle race.

Many different trades are employed in the making of watches, requiring todays artizans to spend a huge amount of time and patience learning all the skills, that go into a one man, one off, piece.

Things like building a face, engraving the numerals and coloring them by hand. Taking gold plate, soldering it and working it into shape. Then turning it in a lathe to achieve final perfection in the shape and form of a watch case. Machining the escapements and balance wheels, installing the jewels. Forming and fitting the hands. Frosting the plates by turning on a spindle and microbeating the finish in with fine steel brushes.

All parts are perfectly and completely finished to the highest standard. Individual screws and components are blued and finished by hand. Heating and cooling in oil baths to specific temperatures. Particularly challenging for parts such as hands which vary in thickness and performance under heat.

Most watchmakers achieve this finish with chemicals but Roger is committed to a heat treatment method which reveals itself to the practiced eye, in achieving great depth of color and transparency, only achieved with hand bluing.

A watch made in this fashion can last forever. With the method of construction enabling deconstruction and reconstruction so the watch can be brought back to new, by an equivalent craftsman, using the well proven methods employed in those made over hundreds of years.

Roger sells his watches through the on line auction site "Antiquorum" and makes to order for private commission.
