Australia is a long way from any other continent and so getting here can feel a bit like running a marathon. A good option is to break up the flight and include a stop off on your way to or from Australia. Another good idea is to stay a little longer and visit another country in the southern hemisphere whilst you are here.
This solution won't work for everyone though. You need at least 3 weeks to visit Australia so adding on a couple of 3 night stop offs will sadly reduce your time too much. One stop off for a couple of days however could be manageable.
Many travellers choose to do a stop over for a few days on the way there or way back from Australia. This also has the added benefit of breaking up the long flight and the jet lag. Asia is usually a classic choice for this and see below for more recommendations for stop overs:
Bangkok and Thailand
This is a popular holiday destination for the Australians as there are a few flight operators keeping flights competitive, and it's still reasonably cheap when you get there.
Here are some suggestions as to what to do whilst in Bangkok:
1) A must visit is the Grand Palace. Whilst you can't actually go into the Palace the buildings are beautiful and can be admired from the outside. This is the official residence of the King but is now only used for special occasions.
2) The Wat Sai Floating Market is a good one to visit and you can get on a barge outside the Grand Palace. It's also good to combine a visit to the Royal Barges Museum. They have some fabulous boats on display that have been used by the King.
3) For the best shopping go to the Chatuchak Weekend Market It's very large so its easy to get lost here. There is everything you could possibly think of here and it's also a good place to eat as there are plenty of restaurants. My advice is to get there early as the heat and crowds get worse as the day goes on. It is open from 7am.
4) If you would like to see more of Bangkok, then take a Segway Tour. This is a tour with a difference as you will be on a 2 wheeled electronic device. They are easy to use and they give you a real sense of freedom as you cruise the streets of Bangkok.
5) No trip to Thailand is complete without experiencing the Bangkok nightlife. Head to the city and take in a lady boy show or just enjoy a few drinks and watch the world go by.
If you would rather head to the beaches of Thailand then consider the area around Phuket. Jet Star fly directly to and from Phuket from Sydney and at certain times of the year there are special reduced fares.
I'd only recommend Phuket if you are a party animal. It's a bit like an Asian equivalent of Ibiza. It's a very big resort with hundreds of clubs and bars and restaurants. If you are after a quieter holiday then I would head to Phi Phi Island. This is a popular day trip from Phuket but a great alternative if you need some quiet time. It is near where they filmed "The Beach."
There isn't room in this article to explore all the stop off alternatives. Other stop over options include Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore. If you are travelling from the US then Fiji is a good stop off to break up the flight and see another beautiful island getaway.
If your trip to Australia is more than 3 weeks then I'd seriously consider a trip to New Zealand or even the tropical island of Bali. The flight times from Australia are reasonable.

This Is Australia $15.35 Like the other Sasek classics, these are facsimile editions of his original books. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than forty years later and, where applicable, facts have been updated for the twenty-first century, appearing on a "This is . . . Today" page at the back of each book. The stylish, charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek's witty, playful narrative, make these books a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember them from their own childhood. In This is Australia, first published in 1970, Sasek swings down under, winging his readers into Sydney, with its famous bridge and space-age Opera House; bustling, modern Melbourne; colonial Adelaide; semitropical Brisbane; the garden city of Canberra; mineral-rich Perth; and Alice Springs, Australia's most famous outback town. |

The Scots in Australia $25.99 Scots have been ‘invisible’ ethnics but happen to be Australia’s third largest immigrant group. The Scots in Australia is a long overdue and comprehensive history of Scottish immigrants – including convicts and free settlers – and their descendants in Australia from 1788 to the present. Combining anecdote, biography and straightforward history, author Malcolm Prentis reevaluates commonly held assumptions and myths from both ends of the migration process. Malcolm Prentis shows that the Scots have had an influence in Australia disproportionate to their numbers. The Scots in Australia powerfully demonstrates the countless ways in which the Scots and their descendants have shaped and been shaped by Australia. |
