The flat heath that surrounds Newmarket has been home to men and their horses since the Roman times. It was on these heaths that Boudicca and her Inceni tribesmen trained in their chariots to bring battle to the Romans. These flat heathlands have been home to horses and their riders ever since.
Newmarket is home to the first recorded horse race, held in 1622. Lord Salisbury's steed won that race for the princely sum of 100 pounds.
The Newmarket area today holds claim to the headquarters of horse racing in the world. In all, there are 2,500 acres of heath and woodland dedicated to the training of horses. On these 2,500 acres there are 40 miles of turf tracks, 17 miles of artificial turf and 30 miles of walking tracks devoted to horses.
Tattersalls was founded in 1776 as the express use of a horse auction. The Tattersall auction is the largest horse auction house in Europe. The auction is held in the fall of each year and bids are placed in terms of pounds, yen, francs and dollars. This international atmosphere provides a truly cosmopolitan flavor to the traditional Tattersall auction.
Newmarket provides not only the place to race horses at it's two tracks, but provides the location for breeding stables where arguably the best stallions and brood mares in the world are brought together to produce some of the finest equine stock in the world.
The two horse racing tracks, The Rowley Mile holds meets in Spring and Autumn and the July course holds meets during the summer. These two tracks hold high stakes races at both meets providing some of the best horse racing in Britain.
From the ancient times of the Roman occupation to today's modern breeding and racing facilities Newmarket has stood at the forefront of the equine community in Britain. Blessed with land highly suitable for horses, Newmarket is a name well known in all racing circles.

The Olympics $4.99 Ask most Olympians how their story begins and they will answer, "When I was young, I always dreamed of going to the Olympics. . ." Some will then go on to tell of their great athletic triumphs. Others will recall agonizing near-misses. But for most, the very fact that they reached the Games at all was a dream come true. For the Olympic Games offer athletes something few others sporting events can: the chance to be recognized as the best in the world at a chosen sport. With stories of great triumphs and great tragedies, the Olympics not only embodies the competitive human spirit, but also sets a stage stage for foreign relations and politics. Historical references combined with amazing sports stories give this book both an educational and exciting appeal. |
