Precious metals like gold or silver were cautiously weighed and exchanged for goods. Because of the fraudulent dealers trying to lift things by passing a lower quality of metals coins made of standardized weights of precious gold was replaced by the barter system that was used earlier. Coins rapidly became the latest form of payment for goods.
To design the faces and figures on their coins Greeks were the ones in the fifth century who started commission too the artists. They normally used depictions of gods, goddesses and mythical heroes. France was also immense coin collectors and to name a few Kings like Louis XIV of France, Ferdinand I and Henry IV. The Berlin coin cabinet was started by Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg.
In 1962 in Detroit, Michigan the first international convention for coin collectors was held on August 15th through the 18th. It was sponsored by the American Numismatic Association and the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association. It was calculated that 40,000 people were in attendance.
Until the start of 1792, with the passing of Coinage Act, the United Nations did not formally start minting coins. As the authorized unit of monetary exchange throughout the states, the act legalized the United States dollar. At the time it coined the US Silver Dollar, the Philadelphia Mint were the first to manufacture US coins. It was later joined by the Denver Mint in 1906. Essentially produced proof sets and gold coins were by the San Francisco Mint and West Point mint. Depending on the mint where it was fashioned, each coin in United States is marked with P, S, D or W.
As of today there are millions of people awestruck by coin collecting and various different museums that display valuable and odd coin collections. These museums comprise the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. as well as the American Numismatic society in New York City which was established in 1891 to persuade education concerning coin collecting. State of Israel Coins Rashi Silver Medal $483.77 Israel State Medal to Commemorate The 900th Anniversary of Rashi s Death The revered and esteemed commentator on the Bible and Talmud writer poet rabbinic authority Rashi was all of these and more. Known by the initials of his name Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac the Hebrew letters also stand for Rabban Shel Yisrael Teacher of Israel. Born in Troyes France in 1040 to a family which could trace its roots to King David Rashi studied at the great academies with the leading scholars of the age. Returning to Troyes he established his own academy which attracted students and scholars from all parts of France and Germany. Rashi had only daughters but these daughters excelled in wisdom and married renowned scholars. Two of his grandsons Rebbenu Tam and Rashbam were among the most gifted of the tosafists ( those who added ) who took Rashi as their personal example of proper behavior and a good life. A modest man who sought neither power nor honors he never held an official title yet his authority was accepted with love and respect. The income to support himself and his family came from his vineyard and not from his rabbinic work. Rashi s commentaries are based on meticulous analysis of the language of the text drawing on rabbinic literature as well as later scholars. His main work was his commentary on most of the tractates of the Babylonian Talmud. This brilliant work is incomparable combining profound thought and the art of teaching that has made its impression on the Jewish people throughout the ages. Rashi s name is also respected among nonJewish scholars. His prolific use of Laaz glosses in old French to explain the texts have rendered Rashi s works a source of reference for Old French. Rashi s later years were marked by the pain of seeing friends and relatives massacred in the First Crusade (10951096). 900 years after the death of this great teacher and rabbi Rashi remains unique in the annals of the Jewish people.
