THE 7 MOST POPULAR MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE SUNDAY LAW ISSUE
The highly anticipated worldwide Sunday law is one of the hot topics of discussion in Sabbath-keeping circles. Both historical and present-day developments seem to be strongly in support of this position on last-day prophecy. However, there is a fair amount of misconception floating around which could undermine the strength of the argument in its favour.
My perspective may be at variance with some of the popular views on this subject (I use to believe them), but based on my research and study of this issue I believe that we are missing the real objective behind this Sunday law agenda. I have written an e-book entitled ‘End-time Prophecy E-course' that gives more details on this and other related end-time issues.
Below I have identified what I consider to be the most popular misconceptions on this Sunday law issue.
1. The mark of the beast is a symbol of Sunday observance. If you are conducting a prophecy seminar, can you truly present that as a biblical interpretation? In the book of Revelation, the Bible gives interpretations for various symbols (see Rev. 17) but we have no evidence that ‘the mark of the beast' is to be treated as a symbol to be interpreted. By this argument I am not discounting the probability of a Sunday decree in the last days. I am just disputing its equivalence to the mark of the beast. For me, no interpretation must be assigned to a particular symbol unless it is clearly stated in the scriptures. Interpretation belongs only to God (Gen. 40:8).
2. Sunday-keepers do not have the mark of the beast but will receive it in the future when the Sunday law is enforced if they continue their Sunday keeping. The problem I have with this perspective is not about what is said, but what is not said. Are we to believe that Sunday-keeping Christians will be converted to sinners because of a Sunday law! If Sunday-keeping Christians don't need a law to get them to go to church on a Sunday there is no strategic purpose to be served by a Sunday edict if it's nothing more than a matter of strengthening the existing ‘status quo'. What is not stated is that in the future, Sunday keeping will serve a completely different purpose from what is now intended, and that's the reason it will become an evil institution.
3. The impending Sunday law will be about coercing people to worship God on Sundays instead of on Sabbaths. If it's just about transferring divine worship from Sabbath to Sunday it would be no different from the present arrangement where people attend Sunday services to worship God. If the Sunday law is to even come close to accomplishing a purpose that would put a smile on Satan's face, it will have to be a different arrangement from what now obtains.
4. People who engage in religious activities on Sundays under the Sunday law enforcement will have taken the mark of the beast. This is one of the weak arguments about this subject that prompted me to reexamine this whole Sunday issue. Which is wrong: Sunday keeping or Sabbath breaking? The fact is, if you engage in religious activities on Sundays, even attending a service, that cannot be wrong! What is wrong is when you substitute it for the Sabbath, in which case you break the Sabbath. Never forget that one of the key strategic purposes of the Sunday law is to supplant the Sabbath!
5. Sunday keepers will receive the wrath of God (the seven last plagues) for worshipping God on Sundays. This could be perceived to be one of the most unfair comments about Sunday keepers if we are not careful. The fact is, God will never destroy His people, the vast majority of whom are Sunday keepers! According the scriptures, all those who are to be afflicted with this curse will clearly be on the side of the enemy (Rev. 16:2). On the other hand, there are going to be those who were once identified with the people of God, but who will knowingly align themselves to Satan. And among that number will include both Sabbath and Sunday keepers. The problem is that many are circulating this misconception with idea that Sunday will continue to be what it is know to be today.
6. Sunday keepers today are worshippers of the papacy. This is one of the most uncharitable comments that I have heard in this Sunday/Sabbath discussion. If we are to follow this argument to its logical end we cannot avoid the conclusion that because if they are worshipping the papacy they cannot be saved! Remember, the Bible says no idolater will enter the kingdom of God! Yes, they might be observing a day of worship that God has not appointed, but they just don't know better. And some may want to advance the argument that they are not ignorant of the obligation of the Sabbath commandment, therefore …. The fact is, an individual could be hearing about the Sabbath from he was born, but that does not mean that he was convicted of it. So we ought not to think that because they were given a thousand Bible studies on the Sabbath subject it must mean that they are now out of ignorance. It is the Holy Spirit that convicts, not mere words.
7. The Sunday law is a non issue because it is not mentioned in the Bible. This position is usually taken by the detractors of a worldwide Sunday decree who believe it to be a hoax cooked up by Sabbath keeping denominations to increase membership.I won't elaborate here but I don't think that Sabbath keepers are claiming that ‘Sunday law' is found in the Bible. I believe that their conclusion is based on deductive reasoning based on a comparison between historical and current developments on the Sunday issue. There were Sunday decrees from as early as the fourth century, enacted upon the authority of the church, and today you have various church leaders calling for Sunday enforcement to stem the desecration of the "Lord's Day"! All these developments are based on pronouncements in the prophetic word! Daniel 7:25 would immediately come to mind. Coupled together one can hardly contemplate anything besides a thinly disguised conspiracy against the commandments of God (Ps. 119:126).

Death on the Fourth of July $27 On July 4, 2000, three young Asian American men visiting the small town of Ocean Shores, Washington, were attacked by a group of skinheads in the parking lot of a Texaco station. Threats and slurs gave way to violence and, ultimately, a fatal stabbing. But this tragedy culminated with a twist. A young white man, flaunting a Confederate flag just moments before, was slain by one of his would-be victims. In the ensuing murder trial, a harsh lesson on what it really means to be an American unfolded, exposing the layers of distrust between minorities and whites in rural America and revealing the dirty little secret that haunts many small towns: hate crime. In" Death on the Fourth of July," veteran journalist David Neiwert explores the hard questions about hate crimes that few are willing to engage. He shares the stories behind the Ocean Shores case through first-hand interviews, and weaves them through an expert examination of the myths, legal issues, and history surrounding these controversial crimes. "Death on the Fourth of July" provides the most clear-headed and rational thinking on this loaded issue yet published, all within the context of one compelling real-life tragedy. |

In Search of the Warrior Spirit, Fourth Edition $19.95 The war in Iraq has heightened interest in the military mindset and raised questions about whether it’s possible to be a mindful, moral fighter at a time when impersonal, technology based warfare reigns. In Search of the Warrior Spirit confronts this thorny issue with Richard Strozzi-Heckler’s trademark personal, sympathetic style. In a top-secret U.S. military experiment, the author was asked to teach Eastern awareness disciplines ranging from aikido to meditation to a group of twenty-five Green Berets. This account chronicles his experiences in the training program and his attempts to revive traditional warriorship in a technological society. In Search of the Warrior Spirit explores the nature of war, the meaning of masculinity, and the need for moral values in the military. The book includes Heckler’s response to 9/11, his experiences with the Pentagon and U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, and his poignant reflections on the movie Black Hawk Down, which depicts the deaths of two of his trainees. In this revised edition, the author talks movingly of his visits to Afghanistan with NATO and about the Trojan Warrior Project and Marine Warrior Project, relating the tragic events in a war zone and revelatory conversations with both ordinary soldiers and such leaders as the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Cabinet Issue 29: Sloth $14.26 One of the seven deadly sins, sloth has long been reviled in the Christian world. But as capitalism appropriated the Christian tradition of work and recast it as the ethical imperative of its own secular new world order, laziness was revaluated by philosophers, writers and artists as a means of resisting the prevalent social order and its gospel of profit-driven hard work. The ambiguous status of the "couch potato" today is a symptom of the complex history of this notion. "Cabinet" 29 examines this history through a variety of essays, interviews and artist projects, including Brian Dillon on writing, illness and procrastination; Thomas Zummer on the fourth-century priest who cast Sloth as one of the seven deadly sins; Marina van Zuylen on modern fatigue; Daniel Rosenberg on nineteenth-century children's books and the pedagogy of time management; Christopher Turner on vasectomies and other medical cures for sloth; and artist Mladen Stilinovic's manifesto for laziness. Also: Mark Morrison on the history of gingerbread houses; Caroline de la Pena on Gustaf Zander's "medical gymnastics;" Paul La Farge on Cao Dai; Marina Warner on Roger Caillois' rock collection; Andrew McKie on the history of obituaries; and a pull-out poster by artist Dan Perjovschi. |

The Supreme Court and the Fourth Amendment`s Exclusionary Rule (Hardcover) $191.82 The application of the Fourth Amendment`s Exclusionary Rule has divided the Justices of the Supreme Court for nearly a century. As the legal remedy for when police violate the Fourth Amendment rights of a person and discover criminal evidence through illegal search and seizure, it is the most frequently litigated constitutional issue in United State`s courts. Tracey Maclin`s The Supreme Court and the Fourth Amendment`s Exclusionary Rule traces the rise and fall of the exclusionary rule using insight and behind-the-scenes access into the Court`s thinking.Based on original archival research into the private papers of retired Justices, Professor Maclin`s analysis clarifies the motivations and thoughts that explain the Court`s exclusionary rule jurisprudence. He includes a comprehensive scholarly and objective discussion of the reasoning behind the Court decisions, and demonstrates that like other constitutional doctrines, the exclusionary rule is a political mechanism that expands and contracts as the times and Justices change. Ultimately, this book will help readers understand how constitutional law is constructed by judges with diverse political perspectives. |
