Badges That Won The West -- Lincoln County Sheriff
The Lincoln County Sheriff's badge recalls the violent 1870s, when a range war erupted between several wealthy ranchers and a trio of corrupt businessmen in the town of Lincoln. The most famous participant in the conflict was William Henry McCarty, a.k.a. William H. Bonney, who was better known as "Billy the Kid". The outlaw gained most of his notoriety during the Lincoln County War by killing Sheriff William Brady and several deputies wearing Lincoln County badges.
The trouble in Lincoln County began when town merchants Lawrence Murphy and James Dolan were joined by a third partner named John Riley in their ownership of Murphy and Dolan Mercantile and Banking. At the time, Lincoln County was the largest county in the nation, spanning about 20% of the entire New Mexico Territory.
Murphy, Dolan and Riley were part of a ring of corruption that extended all the way
to the territorial capital of Santa Fe. They used their political connections to obtain
government contracts with Fort Stanton, and soon controlled virtually all the
trade in the large county. The immense profits on the goods they sold for extortionate prices in their store, coupled with the low prices they paid smaller ranchers for their cattle, understandably angered the county's less prosperous residents.
Lincoln Attorney Alexander McSween was sympathetic to the plight of the smaller ranchers. He and John Tunstall, a wealthy English cattleman, opened a rival mercantile to compete with Murphy and Dolan's monopolistic store. Their new venture had the financial backing of John Chisum, another wealthy rancher in the region who owned more than 100,000 head of cattle. The John Wayne movie, "Chisum" is based upon the main characters in the Lincoln County saga.
In 1878, Murphy and Dolan used their political connections to obtain a legal writ giving them the right to seize a herd of horses from Tunstall as payment for a debt he supposedly owed. The posse formed by Sheriff William Brady to serve the order and seize the horses was composed mostly of criminals. Many were members of the Jessie Evans Gang--an outlaw band that had once counted Billy The Kid among its members. The posse bided their time until they caught Tunstall alone in open country on February 18, 1878. When he objected to their presence on his land, he was shot dead by Jessie Evans, William Morton and Frank Baker.
Though they were too far away to prevent the murder, it was witnessed from a distance by several of Tunstall's "cattle guards", including The Kid. It was Tunstall's murder that ignited the Lincoln County conflict into a full-blown range war.
Outraged by the killing, The Kid and several of Tunstall's "cattle guards" formed their own posse called "The Regulators". Led by Dick Brewer, Tunstall's ranch foreman, the Regulators' sole reason for existing was to track down and and apprehend Tunstall's killers. The Regulators soon flushed out Morton and Baker, and fought a running battle with the two men in the countryside until they surrendered. The Regulators returned to Lincoln a few days later claiming Morton and Baker had both been killed during an alleged escape attempt. Few believed this tale, given the number of bullet holes in the two men, but since the Regulators had warrants of arrest charging Morton and Baker with Tunstall's murder (obtained by Alex McSween), they were still operating within the bounds of the law--however tenuously--at that point.
But that soon changed. Governor Axtell, who was squarely in the Murphy-Dolan camp in the dispute, declared the Regulators outlaws. Undeterred, the Regulators made plans to settle accounts with Sheriff William Brady, whom they suspected of looting Tunstall's store after his death. Within a month, six Regulators, including The Kid,
ambushed and killed Sheriff Brady and George Hindman, another of his deputies, in the middle of Lincoln's main street. Brady sustained at least a dozen wounds, and Hindman was shot twice.
Corrupt he may have been, but the violent murder of Sheriff Brady and his deputy on the main street of Lincoln was enough to convince many other residents of the county that there were no 'good guys' in the conflict, as both sides in the range war seemed equally bloodthirsty.
John Copeland was appointed sheriff to replace the late Brady, but when he refused to take sides in the conflict, Murphy-Dolan again called on their corrupt political partners to remove him and replace him with one of their own. Sheriff George Pippin not only favored the Murphy-Dolan faction, he was on their payroll. The bloodshed continued with sporadic killings, finally culminating in a five-day siege of McSween's Lincoln home, during which his house was set on fire. The Regulators who had taken refuge in the house managed to escape and flee, but McSween was shot and killed, though he was unarmed when he ran from the blazing house.
In the fall of 1878, Governor Lew Wallace was appointed by President Hayes to replace the corrupt Governor Axtell, whose collusion with the Murphy/Dolan group was a major factor in the Lincoln County conflict. In an attempt to end the range war,
Governor Wallace issued an amnesty for all combatants--except Billy the Kid. The
amnesty officially ended the range war.
The Kid and his gang of followers, meantime, had turned to cattle rustling to support
themselves, and had become a serious nuisance to the cattle ranchers in the area, including John Chisum. In November, 1880, Pat Garrett was elected Sheriff of Lincoln County with Chisum's backing, running on a platform of putting an end to the cattle rustling in the county, and Governor Wallace put a $500 bounty on Billy the Kid.
Sheriff Garrett and a posse tracked down and killed two of the remaining Regulators--The Kid's closest compadres, Tom O'Folliard and Charlie Bowdre, and on July 14, 1881, killed Billy the Kid in Fort Sumter, New Mexico. All three of them are buried together in Fort Sumter, beneath a headstone with their names carved beneath an epitaph that reads, simply, "Pals". After the marker was stolen several times, it was surrounded by a heavy wire cage to deter further souvenir hunters.

The Living Lincoln $20.61 "The Living Lincoln" gives new voice to several aspects of Abraham Lincoln's career as seen through the lens of recent scholarship, in essays that show how the sixteenth president's appeal continues to endure and expand. Featuring eleven essays from major historians, the book offers thoughtful, provocative, and highly original examinations of Lincoln's role as commander-in-chief, his use of the press to shape public opinion, his position as a politician and party leader, and the changing interpretations of his legacy as a result of cultural and social changes over the century and a half since his death. In an opening section focusing largely on Lincoln's formative years, insightful explorations into his early self-education and the era before his presidency come from editors Frank J. Williams and Harold Holzer, respectively. Readers will also glimpse a Lincoln rarely discerned in books: calculating politician, revealed in Matthew Pinsker's illuminating essay, and shrewd military strategist, as demonstrated by Craig L. Symonds. Stimulating discussions from Edna Greene Medford, John Stauffer, and Michael Vorenberg tell of Lincoln's friendship with Frederick Douglass, his gradualism on abolition, and his evolving thoughts on race and the Constitution to round out part two. Part three features reflections on his martyrdom and memory, including a counterfactual history from Gerald J. Prokopowicz that imagines a hypothetical second term for the president, emphasizing the differences between Lincoln and his successor, Andrew Johnson. Barry Schwartz's contribution presents original research that yields fresh insight into Lincoln's evolving legacy in the South, while Richard Wightman Fox dissects Lincoln's 1865 visit to Richmond, and Orville Vernon Burton surveys and analyzes recent Lincoln scholarship. This thought-provoking new anthology, introduced at a major bicentennial symposium at Harvard University, offers a wide range of ideas and interpretations by some of the best-known and most widely respected historians of our time. The Living Lincoln is essential reading for those seeking a better understanding of this nation's greatest president and how his actions resonate today. |

Lincoln: The Untold Stories - $19.99 One of the most popular and respected presidents in the history of the United States of America, President Abraham Lincoln remains a mystery to even the most dedicated historians. In this documentary, the filmmakers at The History Channel unearth the transcriptions of Lincoln's official biographer William Herndon in order to shed some much-needed light on the fallen-president's mystery-shrouded past. Shortly after the president was assassinated, Herndon began conducting interviews with over 250 of Lincoln's closest friends and family members in a quest that would ultimately stretch three decades. During that time, Herndon was able to gather a comprehensive view of the man who shaped America. Now, for the very first time, Herndon's tireless research is revealed to the public in a film that aims to finally resole the mystery of Lincoln's formative years. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Abe Lincoln in Illinois - Fullscreen B&W $24.99 Raymond Massey plays Abe Lincoln in this moving adaptation of Robert Sherwood's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Expanded a bit for cinematic purposes, the film traces Lincoln's progress from his days of scrambling for a living as a woodsman, to his courtship of the tragic Ann Rutledge (Mary Howard) and then the mercurial Mary Todd (Ruth Gordon), to the formative years of his law practice, to his debates with Stephen Douglas (Gene Lockhart), and finally to his election as President of the soon-to-be-divided United States in 1860. Latter-day critics have complained about Massey's stolidity in his signature role, but even the most stone-hearted viewer will be moved by such scenes as Lincoln riding through the ruins of what once was the village of Salem; Abe's heated election-eve quarrel with his spiteful wife Mary; and his climactic speech from the observation car of the train that will carry him to Washington...and immortality. Abe Lincoln at Illinois turned out to be a succes d'estime for its producer Max Gordon and its studio (RKO), taking a bath to the tune of $750,000. Its failure moved one Hollywood wise-guy to collar Gordon at a party and say, "I can't understand it, Max. Lincoln was so kind to everybody but you." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Formative Assessment and Science Education $150.8 Formative Assessment and Science Education documents the findings of a research project which investigated the ways in which teachers and students used formative assessment to improve the teaching and learning of science in some New Zealand classrooms. The research documented in this book used the definition of formative assessment as the process used by teachers and students to recognise and respond to students' learning, in order to enhance that learning, during the learning'. The book contains one detailed case study from the research, as well as cameos of instances of formative assessment. The book also contains two summaries of the research findings - a model developed to describe the process of formative assessment used by the teachers and students involved in the research, and a summary of the characteristics of formative assessment. The findings are also theorised with respect to sociocultural and discursive views of learning. This research will be of interest to graduate students and researchers, as well as teacher educators, curriculum developers, and assessment specialists. |

Formative Assessment and All That Jazz $146.58 The findings of this research essentially indicate that formative assessment strategies, when engaged regularly and properly, are effective in informing teaching practice. Furthermore, the findings suggest that teachers who regularly collaborate about their practice are more effective and more likely to attempt new formative assessment strategies in their practice. This collaboration, within a supportive professional learning community, affords the practice of a more guaranteed and viable curricular experience for students as well as reflective and improved pedagogy among the teachers engaged in the study. Similar to the practice of jazz musicians who collaborate in an environment where mentoring of younger musicians helps to nurture improvisational skills, we attempted to use collaboration as a vehicle to nurture our practice of formative assessment and our pedagogy as teachers.
