When I opened one of my drawers at my small home office on the other day, I saw quite some of my coin collections. Perhaps by now, I could call myself as a 'small sized-collector for coins'. In fact, I never planned to be one. It was all begun just like that, accidentally.
It was all begun when I started my first ever overseas journey, joining a group tour visiting 12 European countries all at once in three weeks time, fifteen years ago. As a debutant traveler at that time, I got excited about everything. The over-hilarious feeling about traveling overseas for the first time had made me become so sloppy. This included how reckless I spent my pocket money that I got from my parents. Indeed, my parents were the major sponsor for the trip as a gratitude for me since I have successfully made myself graduated after 'fighting very hard' toward my high-school's final year exams.
As everyone knows, Europe in early nineties was still 'apart'. Not like today when most countries in Europe are using Euro as the single currency, at that time every country had its own currency system with different exchange rate from one to another; so that every time I entered a country, I had to exchange money in local money changers. The euphoria as first-time traveler caught me in the situation that I got confused with so many different denominations of currencies. Just imagine, 12 countries meant 12 different currencies. The paper money was quite simple to manage whatever the denomination, but I found difficulties in handling the tokens. It was hard for me to differentiate which coins belong to what country, so that every time I wanted to buy something (in local café, street vendors for souvenirs, etc...) I always used the paper money (with big denominations). As a result, most of the time I got a lot of change from the transactions I made, both the paper's ones and tokens. I put the bank notes into my wallet, and simply put the coins into the pockets of my pants, jackets or inside my money belt.
Three weeks of journey around Europe visiting more than 18 cities in 12 countries for a first-timer like me was quite tiresome. Every the end of the day after all day long of journey, I always went to bed right away when I entered my hotel room. No time for doing anything else, not even taking out those coins out off the pockets of my pants, jackets as well as my money belt.
Back to my home country after the journey ended, when I unpacked to have all my dirty cloths washed, I checked one by one all my cloths; and surprisingly I found A LOT of coins in them. All together, they were about 3 kilograms in weight and were from 17 different countries including those I did not even visit! Yeah, that might happen when local vendors gave me change, I never checked them one by one, so that it was possible when I bought something in Rome, I got some token changes in Czech Koruna or Russian Ruble instead of Italian Lira. Anyway, even when they were honest and gave me the right change, I did not event know, because in fact, I never counted them one by one -just put them into my pocket.
Knowing the fact that I had a lot of coins, I have decided to bring them when I traveled to Europe for the next time. With my profession as tour manager specializing in European destinations since seven years ago, indeed I travel quite extensive. Though, every time I planned to travel, I told myself to bring them along, and to spend them all the way. However, every time I traveled, I have always forgotten to carry them out. And in every end of my journey, my coin collection added up from time to time. My wife has ever reminded me to "always check your pockets before you get undressed, and put them in a small pouch that you would always take wherever you go". One time, she even gave me a coin pouch that she especially made by herself as my birthday gift to accommodate her idea. She knew that I would never lose it. Though I always bring the pouch with me whenever I travel, most of the time it stayed in my luggage. I often forgot to utilize it. My coin collections keep on growing!
And when Europe has finally 'reunified' in 2001, using Euro within its 15 member countries as the replacement of all local currencies, my coins reminded as collectibles. Though the National Bank in every country has given sometime to exchange for new currency, I did not think that it would be good idea to bring up those various coins to each country's National Bank just to exchange for some Euros. So, I kept them in my drawer still.
I have tried to calculate the 'value' of all my 13,268 of 27 different European countries' coins collection against US Dollar today (by using yahoo currency converter). And I was quite surprised when I knew that my collectibles for 15 years worthed almost..... USD 1,000!
My friend told me that collecting coins will not make me lose. The value of old and antique coins will increase from time to time because there are so many people in this world who love collecting old and ancient coins. I hope that it is true. I just dream, who knows fifteen years from know, my Hungarian Forint or my ex-Belgian Franc tokens would worth ten times as they were.
Or, maybe any of you who read this article are interested to trade (coins) with me?
