There are 3 rules that every 1L should follow if they expect to survive!
RULE 1: BRING YOUR HEART!
Your first day of law school, you may get the famous speech given by most law professors. They will tell you, "Look to the person sitting to your left and your right - one of them will not be here next year." In a lot of instances this is true to a degree. The 2L class is usually much fewer than the 1L. Students flunk out. Is it because they are stupid? NO! The biggest difference in passing your classes in the first year and failing them lies in your heart - not in your mind! You are just as capable of understanding the IRAC method as the guy/gal sitting next to you. Law is not difficult, it is hard. You must possess the drive to make it through this initial process. This will take time to develop so don't worry if you think you have what it takes. Tell yourself you can do it, put your mind to it, become dedicated, and you will develop what it takes to succeed as a 1L.
You need to build endurance to be able to read and write for hours a day - consecutively. You need to be able to build solid outlines if that is indeed your study method. Bring your heart with you to law school. Oh, and don't lose it in your 2L year either. Being able to study for 8 hours a day after 3 hours of lecture will almost assure your success as a 1L.
RULE 2: BE PREPARED!
Make sure you are prepared for everything that could come your way. Don't get sick a day before your exam; get your flu shots! Don't lose sight of the importance of exercise. Hit the gym! Most importantly, make sure you read your assigned cases and are prepared for lecture EVERYDAY. This is essential. Your college days of partying Thursday night and going to class on Friday morning hungover should be over. Are you prepared? Well, you'd better be if you want to stay in the game!
RULE 3: MAKE FRIENDS!
One of the most important lessons I learned in law school was gaining strength in the power of numbers. On Day 1, you need to find dedicated people to befriend. A study group plays a vital role in survival. Find a group who will help and encourage you to succeed! Of course for those of you who prefer to study on your own, you can go ahead and do that as well. However, I do not recommend it because of the complexity of the law. For example, if you do not understand the concept of res judicata, your partner may understand it. If your partner does not understand the concept of hearsay, you may be an expert! It works!
You will soon find that there are no guarantees in law! However, if you follow these simple rules, you will find that you would be a lot better off with them in your war chest. Be dedicated to these rules and it will pay off in spades! Good luck on your journey, you are in for one helluva ride!

First-Year Sobriety $19.3 The first in a series of three recovery guides for the first three years of sobriety, First-Year Sobriety uses the voices of many women and men who are struggling in the often baffling territory of their first year of sobriety to show that despite their differing experiences, all are united in the process of giving life without alcohol or other drugs a chance. These are people who are alternately amazed, appalled, delighted, depressed, illuminated, disturbed, or simply thrown by their first days, weeks, and months of sobriety Kettelhack explores the challenges all seem to face: learning to break through loneliness, isolation, and fear; finding ways to deal with anger, depression, and resentment; and learning how to deal with a new and sometimes overwhelming happiness. The early days of recovery, are often lonely and frightening. First-Year Sobriety offers constant reassurance that no one is alone or unique in this journey. |
