Since Ted Kennedy's death, people have speculated that second wife Vicki will finish his term in the Senate. However, some people would ask what about the first wife Joan Bennett Kennedy? Joan Kennedy was also always by Ted Kennedy's side during several devastating tragedies. She was also involved in many of Kennedy's political activities.
In 1964, she took over and managed Ted Kennedy's campaign for his first U.S. Senate term when Ted was suffering from a major back injury due to a plane crash. She made appearances in these campaigns. When Ted Kennedy was in trial where he pleaded guilty for the fatal accident that killed Mary Jo Kopechne, Joan was by his side all the time. Her alcohol drinking problems today, were said to be caused by her life with Ted where she had three instances of miscarriage and even divorce.
