Suggestive selling is a retail term that is nearly as old as retail itself, I would guess. The term suggestive selling, which is almost self-explanatory, refers to a retail salesperson mentioning items related to those which her customer is preparing to purchase. The hope is that the customer will buy the other items. That's it in a nutshell! The purpose of suggestive selling is to try to increase transaction size because increasing transaction size is one of the keys to retail sales improvement.

The reasons that we would want to improve retail sales are obvious. Every store owner wants to increase his sales. Often, however, when I consult with retailers and we talk about increasing their sales, it seems that their focus is trying to get more customers into their stores. That's all good, but consider this: Malcolm Gladwell, author of "The Tipping Point" and "Blink" wrote in an article titled "The Science of Shopping" that "As the retail market grows more cutthroat, store owners have come to realize that it's all but impossible to increase the number of customers coming in and have concentrated instead on getting the customers they do have to buy more."

Perhaps characterizing bringing new customers into a store as impossible is a little strong, but the core message is powerful nonetheless. Every person who enters your store is an opportunity. Now I could take this discussion to the importance of increasing conversion rate. I won't, however because I want you to focus on increasing your transactions size. Which brings me back to suggestive selling.

As I mentioned before, suggestive selling in the traditional sense refers to suggesting related items. Let me give you an example from my hardware store background. A lady who I am helping has just picked out a gallon of paint. While I am completing the transaction, I ask her if she has the masking tape she will need for keeping the baseboard spatter free and perhaps I mention drop cloths and paint rollers as well. If she buys any of the things I mentioned, I have increased this transaction and indeed, I have increased the average transaction size for the day.

Okay, simple enough, right? Right! But here are a couple more things I want to mention. Suggestive selling can also be used to upsell. Upselling is the art of selling a better product. Selling better products usually produce higher transaction amounts and additional margin. You've got to agree that both of those would be good things. So let me use my paint sale example again. The same lady comes in, picks out her paint, and brings it to the counter. In conversation, I simply ask "Do you really want to work that hard?" Of course, this gets her attention and allows me to tell her how much easier my slightly more expensive paint is to apply.

Upselling? Suggestive selling? The two blend together to become part of the art of becoming a really successful retail salesperson. Here's the problem. You've probably taught these things to your staff before. They probably worked at it for a while and I bet they had some success. But when the ideas are not at their top level consciousness, the clerks revert to their old ways. I've seen it a gazillion times....and believe me that's a lot! So perhaps what you need is a cueing device.

A cueing device is something that reminds us to do something or think of something else. For example in your next store meeting, talk about the importance of suggestive selling to your store's success. Get a large piggy bank and give him a name (we'll call him Fred for now). Place Fred near your cash registers. Instruct your clerks that whenever they see Fred they are to try to sell one more thing to whomever they are interacting with. Fred will help keep suggestive selling at top level consciousness.

You can have fun with Fred. Feed him a dollar a day and give him as an award to the salesperson who produces the biggest ticket increase size for the month. Have your clerks work out a secret Fred code that they can deliver to each other while customers are in the store to reinforce Fred's message. Fred can be a champion at increasing suggestive selling.

His book has been endorsed by Scott Wright of the North American Retail Hardware Association and Art Brown of the Mid-American Lumberman's' association as well as other industry experts. Philip is also one of the founding partners of a retail consulting company of the same name, Discovery-Based Retail. His company works with retailers, both small and large, helping them enhance their profitability by improving their customer interface. Their company also specializes in improving the production of the entire salesspace and designs floorplans to accomplish this.

This study challenges the popular notion that four parables in the Gospel of Luke-the Good Samaritan, the Rich Fool, the Rich Man and Lazarus, and the Pharisee and the Toll Collector-are example stories. A wealth of scholars' views on the example stories are scrutinized, with Adolf Jnlicher's pivotal definition receiving special attention. The various criteria used to distinguish between parable and example are assessed from both a literary and a rhetorical perspective in order to ascertain what, if any, formal features are peculiar to the example stories. Tucker shows that attempts to differentiate the example stories from other narrative parables attributed to Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels are largely unsuccessful. The result is that these four parables in the Gospel of Luke can be seen for what they really are.

In business, as in other aspects of life, we learn and grow from the examples set by others. Imitation can lead to innovation. But in order to grow innovatively, how do businesses decide what firms to imitate? And how do they choose what practices to follow? Learning by Example takes an unprecedented look at the benchmarking initiative of a major financial institution. David Strang closely follows twenty-one teams of managers sent out to observe the practices of other companies in order to develop recommendations for change in their own organization. Through extensive interviews, surveys, and archival materials, Strang reveals that benchmarking promotes a distinctive managerial regime with potential benefits and pitfalls. He explores the organizations treated as models of best practice, the networks that surround a bank and form its reference group, the ways managers craft calls for change, and the programs implemented in the wake of vicarious learning. Strang finds that imitation does not occur through mindless conformity. Instead, managers act creatively, combining what they see in external site visits with their bank's strategic objectives, interpreted in light of their understanding of rational and progressive management. Learning by Example opens the black box of interorganizational diffusion to show how managers interpret, advocate, and implement innovations

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Proof by example (also known as inappropriate generalization) is a logical fallacy whereby one or more examples are claimed as proof for a more general statement. In logic and rhetoric, a fallacy is incorrect reasoning in argumentation resulting in a misconception. By accident or design, fallacies may exploit emotional triggers in the listener or interlocutor (e.g. appeal to emotion), or take advantage of social relationships between people (e.g. argument from authority). Fallacious arguments are often structured using rhetorical patterns that obscure the logical argument, making fallacies more difficult to diagnose. Also, the components of the fallacy may be spread out over separate arguments. The taxonomy of material fallacies is based on that of Aristotles Organon (Sophistici elenchi). The spreadsheet has become a ubiquitous engineering tool, and Microsoft Excel is the standard spreadsheet software package. Over the years, Excel has become such a complex program that most engineers understand and use only a tiny part of its power and features. This book is aimed at electronics engineers and technicians in particular, showing them how to best use Excel's features for computations, circuit modeling, graphing, and data analysis as applied to electronics design. Separate chapters cover lookup tables and file I/O, using macros, graphing, controls, using Analysis Toolpak for statistical analysis, databases, and linking into Excel from other sources, such as data from a serial port. The book is basically an engineering cookbook, with each chapter providing tutorial information along with several Excel "recipes" of interest to electronics engineers. The accompanying CD-ROM features ready-to-run, customizable Excel worksheets derived from the book examples, which will be useful tools to add to any electronics engineer's spreadsheet toolbox. Engineers are looking for any and all means to increase their efficiency and add to their "bag of design tricks." Just about every electronics engineer uses Excel but most feel that the program has many more features to offer, if they only knew what they were! The Excel documentation is voluminous and electronics engineers don't have the time to read it all and sift through looking for those features that are directly applicable to their jobs and figure out how to use them. This book does that task for them-pulls out those features that they need to know about and shows them how to make use of them in specific design examples that they can then tailor to their own design needs. *This is the ONLY book to deal with Excel specifically in the electronics field *Distills voluminous and time-consuming Excel documentation down to nitty-gritty explanations of those features that are directly applicable to the electronics engineer's daily job duties *The accompanying CD-ROM provides ready-to-use, fully-customizable worksheets from the book's examples

The essentials of regression analysis through practical applications Regression analysis is a conceptually simple method for investigating relationships among variables. Carrying out a successful application of regression analysis, however, requires a balance of theoretical results, empirical rules, and subjective judgement. Regression Analysis by Example, Fourth Edition has been expanded and thoroughly updated to reflect recent advances in the field. The emphasis continues to be on exploratory data analysis rather than statistical theory. The book offers in-depth treatment of regression diagnostics, transformation, multicollinearity, logistic regression, and robust regression. This new edition features the following enhancements: Chapter 12, Logistic Regression, is expanded to reflect the increased use of the logit models in statistical analysis A new chapter entitled Further Topics discusses advanced areas of regression analysis Reorganized, expanded, and upgraded exercises appear at the end of each chapter A fully integrated Web page provides data sets Numerous graphical displays highlight the significance of visual appeal Regression Analysis by Example, Fourth Edition is suitable for anyone with an understanding of elementary statistics. Methods of regression analysis are clearly demonstrated, and examples containing the types of irregularities commonly encountered in the real world are provided. Each example isolates one or two techniques and features detailed discussions of the techniques themselves, the required assumptions, and the evaluated success of each technique. The methods described throughout the book can be carried out with most of the currently available statistical software packages, such as the software package R. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

"I picked up a copy of "JavaScript by Example "over the weekend and wanted to thank you for putting out a book that makes JavaScript easy to understand. I've been a developer for several years now and JS has always been the "monster under the bed," so to speak. Your book has answered a lot of questions I've had about the inner workings of JS but was afraid to ask. Now all I need is a book that covers Ajax and Coldfusion. Thanks again for putting together an outstanding book." -"Chris Gomez, Web services manager, Zunch Worldwide, Inc." "I have been reading your "UNIX""(R) ""Shells by Example "book, and I must say, it is brilliant. Most other books do not cover all the shells, and when you have to constantly work in an organization that uses tcsh, bash, and korn, it can become very difficult. However, your book has been indispensable to me in learning the various shells and the differences between them...so I thought I'd email you, just to let you know what a great job you have done " -"Farogh-Ahmed Usmani, B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc., DIC, project consultant (Billing Solutions), Comverse" "I have been learning Perl for about two months now; I have a little shell scripting experience but that is it. I first started with "Learning Perl "by O'Reilly. Good book but lacking on the examples. I then went to "Programming Perl "by Larry Wall, a great book for intermediate to advanced, didn't help me much beginning Perl. I then picked up "Perl by Example, Third Edition-"this book is a superb, well-written programming book. I have read many computer books and this definitely ranks in the top two, in my opinion. The examples are excellent. The author shows you the code, the output of each line, and then explains each line in every example." -"Dan Patterson, software engineer, GuideWorks, LLC" "Ellie Quigley has written an outstanding introduction to Perl, which I used to learn the language from scratch. All one has to do is work through her examples, putz around with them, and before long, you're relatively proficient at using the language. Even though I've graduated to using "Programming Perl "by Wall et al., I still find Quigley's book a most useful reference." -"Casey Machula, support systems analyst, Northern Arizona University, College of Health and Human Services" "When I look at my bookshelf, I see eleven books on Perl programming. "Perl by Example, Third Edition, "isn't on the shelf; it sits on my desk, where I use it almost daily. When I bought my copy I had not programmed in several years and my programming was mostly in COBOL so I was a rank beginner at Perl. I had at that time purchased several popular books on Perl but nothing that really put it together for me. I am still no pro, but my book has many dog-eared pages and each one is a lesson I have learne

Yvette Chauvire: A Star by Example -

$19.99

A note for the uninitiated: a prima ballerina assoluta represents the highest ranking of ballerina for women. Originally designated by the Italian Ballet Masters of the Romantic Ballet period, it is profoundly difficult to achieve; Frenchwoman Yvette Chauvir? fit the bill perfectly, however. A dancer adroit with numerous forms, from classical to romantic ballets, Chauvir? inspired countless artists and - some would argue - not only equaled but transcended the cr?me-de-la-cr?me of her chosen field. This 1987 documentary by director Dominique Delouche embodies one of the few filmed biographical portraits of Chauvir?. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Flow Visualization: Techniques & Example

Flow Visualization: Techniques & Example

$129.14

Throughout history, flow visualization has been an important tool in fluid dynamics research. It has been used extensively in the fields of engineering, physics, medical science, meteorology, oceanography and sport aerodynamics, to name just a few. The importance of flow visualization led Professor F N M Brown (1971) of the University of Notre-Dame to comment, .".. A man is not a dog to smell out each individual track, he is a man to see, and seeing, to analyze..." This statement encapsulates the importance of first visualizing the flow before proceeding with detailed measurement and mathematical modeling. In addition, there is a great deal of esthetic pleasure to be gained from seeing the results of flow visualization. This aspect of flow visualization reaches out to the general public: we are all familiar with the aspect of clouds in the sky, the trail of cigarette smoke, and the swirling patterns to be seen in rivers and seas. Unlike previous publications which concentrated mainly on the theoretical aspect of flow visualization, this book focuses on the techniques required to perform high quality flow visualization. It is aimed primarily at the practitioner of flow visualization studies. Obtaining good flow visualization results is, in many ways, more an art than a science, and experience plays a deciding role. Hence each chapter of this invaluable volume has been written by an expert in a particular technique.

Action Research: An Example

Action Research: An Example

$178.44

Shorttitle The research consists of a case study of the method used by an active nongovernmental organization (NGO) currently operating in developing countries. The operating method of the selected NGO has been reviewed in light of the characteristics of the research methodology called action research. After studying the theory and practice of the NGO and conducting interviews with the organizations founders and staff, with individuals directly and indirectly involved in NGOs interventions in Brazil, and with government representatives in Brazil I compared the theory and practice of the NGO to the theory and practice of action research. The results showed that the method used by the selected NGO differs from action research in the conception of personal experience. In action research, the starting point of a social act is the acknowledgement of an oppressed condition; in the NGOs method, the starting point is the acknowledgement of the potential capability to freely act in a given social setting. However, in all other significant aspects the NGOs method emulates action research.
