While rummaging through your great-great-grandparent's stuff at the attic, you have struck your first numismatic gold- a rare gold coin from the early 19th century. Since then, you have started collecting gold coins.
The next thing you have to take into consideration is to how to properly care for them- which means cleaning and storing these rare coins. Please note that sometimes, cleaning might affect the value of these coins so if you are in doubt, it is better to consult a professional first.
If you must clean your coins, use mild but effective cleansing agents that you can easily find in your kitchen such as vinegar, lemon juice, rubbing alcohol, baking soda and ammonia. Please note that you should never use household soap and other cleaning products that contain sulfuric acid as these products can corrode your coins. Also, using a brush is a big no-no! Let the coins soak in the container with the cleansing liquid for 3-5 minutes then gently clean with a soft cloth and rinse thoroughly.
If these products are not able to do the trick, purchase cleaning products used by professionals. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully to avoid any mishaps.
If done, leave the coins to dry or gently pat with a soft, clean fabric. The operative word is pat, so do not rub or polish which can lead to scratches on the coin's surface.
Once you have properly cleaned them, the next step is to properly store them. Some experts advise putting the coins in especially made plastic pockets and assemble them into an album. The plastic sheets will protect them from scratches due to mishandling. These plastic pockets are available in grocery stores and coin collector shops. Use only acid-free paper materials. Unknown to many, paper eventually breaks down and releases acidic chemicals that can cause discoloration and spotting on the coin's surface.
Make sure that the coins are not exposed to moisture and direct heat to avoid oxidation. Store them at room temperature. You can store them in safety deposit boxes or in coin cabinets.
Should you need to touch your coins, precaution must be taken as constant coin handling will diminish the coin's quality. It is important to note that our fingers contain grit and bodily oil which can significantly affect the coin's condition. Wash your hands and do not eat or drink while handling your coins. You can wear latex gloves or handle the coins at the edges to avoid damaging the front and back surfaces. Besides, fingerprints are hard to remove from the coin's surface.
Collecting coins is not a very easy hobby, which is why extra care must be taken to ensure their protection and longevity so that they can be a source of enjoyment for decades or even generations to come. One must also remember that the older these coins get, the higher their values become. Mishandling of numismatic gold and other coins however can greatly diminish their quality and consequently, their monetary value.

Desta and King Solomon's Coin of Magic and Fortune $27.48 A moving and riveting epic novel--a family saga, spanning three generations and dealing with their dark and mysterious past, set in an Ethiopian, magical mountainous countryside, in a world of monkeys, goats and spirits. Desta, a seven-year-old boy and Abraham, his middle-aged father, are on separate but parallel missions. The boy dreams of climbing one of the mountains that circle his home to touch the sky and run his fingers through the clouds. Abraham yearns to find his own long lost father. Each faces a series of obstacles and each ultimately realizes his dream, although not in the way he hoped. In the center of this sweeping novel is a 2,800-year old Solomonic gold coin, a family heirloom that went missing along with Desta's vanished grandfather forty years earlier. A symbol of the family's financial success and personal pride, this coin is one of the reasons why Abraham grew up fatherless and why his mother abandoned her farmland estate and came to settle in an isolated, mountainous valley, setting the family saga in motion Reviews Spectacular . . .
