Rarely is the role of economics given credit for social change. The fall of the Soviets resulted in large part from the leadership viewing the Middle Class of the US and Europe and realizing that even at the top of the Soviet system they had nothing. China looking over the fence at Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan had tangible evidence of their failed system.
Today the clerics in Iran are revolting not because they are against an Islamic theocracy but because the economic course pursued by the Islamic revolution has led to a further distancing economically from the rest of the world. In making a shift - creating a schism - the clerics are hoping to derive support from a younger generation that one day may revolt and bring down the whole system. When the per capita GDP of oil rich Iran is less than half of Israel and Israel has the military technology to level much of the Middle East, leadership is given pause and must, to maintain control, define better economic policies.
The speed at which geopolitical change is occurring has accelerated dramatically. Intractable problems now become negotiable with the US taking a leadership role. The cartel glued together by oil is crumbling. Russia is talking directly with the US to limit nuclear weapons and providing air corridors for the US effort in Afghanistan. Of course the latter is not too surprising since the Soviets lost in Afghanistan. North Korea is becoming increasingly isolated, Syria wants a dialog with the US and Iraq is both taking control of their security as well as offering oil contracts for development. All these changes lead to a solidified geopolitical paradigm benefiting the West and the US. The move towards stability is both an important part of the Long Wave upgrade and the necessary platform for increased economic activity.
Imagine the situation I proposed months ago of a stable Iran as an ally of the US aiding in the fight against terrorism, receiving development technology from the west for refineries and standing down on Israel. With no Iranian funding Hezbollah collapses changing the dynamic in Lebanon while putting pressure on the Palestinians to settle with Israel. Iraq increasing dramatically its oil production stabilizes oil prices while transferring needed money for infrastructure development. A democratic and prosperous Iraq much like a democratic and prosperous South Korea offers a tangible model for Middle Eastern development while snaring western development dollars.
What seemed impossible even as little as a year ago now seems obtainable. Like the shift towards stability that occurred very quickly under Eisenhower, Obama is benefiting from the mistakes of the past 30 years while offering hope of a different global paradigm.
