Wilson disease is a genetic - inherited - disorder that causes excess levels of copper to become built up in an individual's body. The human body normally retains a small amount of copper through certain foods which is needed in order to remain healthy; however, when the level of copper becomes too high, it is toxic to many major organs including the, liver, kidneys, eyes, and brain.
This disease is acquired when both parents of an individual are each carrying an abnormal copy of the ATP7B gene and the individual inherits one from each parent. This disease occurs in both women and men on an equal basis and affects approximately one out of forty thousand individuals in the United States.
Signs and Symptoms of Wilson Disease
Normally, when copper is obtained by the body through certain foods, the liver filters any excess copper releasing it into the bile which is produced by the liver where it is passed on to the gastrointestinal tract and eventually excreted. In patients who have acquired Wilson disease, the rate at which the liver releases this copper is significantly reduced causing it to build up within the liver and enter the bloodstream.
Once copper enters the bloodstream it travels to major organs including the brain, eyes, and kidneys and causes damage at abnormally high levels. Typically, the liver and central nervous system are the first to be attacked when an individual has Wilson disease.
When the levels of copper within the liver become excessive, this may cause liver disease that becomes chronic in some patients who will then experience the symptoms that may include jaundice which is a condition that causes the yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
Other symptoms of Wilson disease include the swelling of the spleen or liver, fatigue, a build up of fluid that will occur in the abdomen or lower extremities, and some individuals may have a tendency to bruise easily due to the fact that when the liver is functioning normally, it produces the proteins that are essential to allow for the clotting of our blood.
Effects of Wilson Disease on the Central Nervous System and the Eyes
When excess levels of copper begin to affect the central nervous systems it can cause many issues with neurological functioning that may cause an individual with Wilson disease to have difficulty when swallowing, problems with their physical coordination, as well as speech.
Some individuals may also experience tremors or movements that are uncontrollable as well as a stiffening of the muscles and changes that affect their behavior. Some individuals may acquire a condition that affects the eyes and is called "Kayser-Fleischer rings". This condition causes a ring to appear around the iris and edge of the cornea of both eyes that is a rusty-brown, gold or greenish gold in color.
Treatment of Wilson Disease
An individual who as inherited Wilson disease will require treatment that is life long to control the excess level of copper within their system. This is typically done with medications that are capable of releasing the excess copper that is contained in the organs into the bloodstream where it is then filtered by the kidneys and eliminated through urination.
Other forms of treatment may be required to treat the symptoms or any damage that may have occurred to the organs, however, if Wilson disease is detected in its early stages, it can be effectively treated and prevent any serious complications from arising.

Native Copper $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Copper, as native copper, is one of the few metallic elements to occur in uncombined form as a natural mineral, although most commonly occurs in oxidized states and mixed with other elements. Native copper was an important ore of copper in historic times and was used by prehistoric peoples. Native copper occurs as rarely isometric cubic and octahedral crystals, but more typically as irregular masses and fracture fillings. It has a reddish, orangish, and/or brownish color on fresh surfaces, but typically is weathered and coated with a green tarnish of copper(II) carbonate (also known as patina or verdigris). Its specific gravity is 8.9 and its hardness is 2.53.The mines of the Keweenaw native copper deposits of Upper Michigan were major copper producers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and are the largest deposits of native copper in the world. The Archaeometallurgy of Copper $159 The book deals with the ancient exploitation and production of copper, exemplified by the mining district of Faynan, Jordan. It is an interdisciplinary study that comprises (mining-) archaeological and scientific aspects. The development of organisational patterns and technological improvements of mining and smelting through the ages (5th millennium BC to Roman Byzantine period), in a specific mining region, is discussed. Principles of modern archaeometallurgy in the field and laboratory are explained. An important focus are mineralogical and chemical slag investigations and on the role of trace elements and lead isotope abundance ratios in ores and metals. Provenance studies show the distribution of Faynan copper in the Southern Levant in the Early Bronze Age. |

Copper and Bronze in Art: Corrosion, Colorants, Conservation $77.46 David A. Scott Pigments, corrosion products, and minerals are usually considered separately, either as painting materials or as the deterioration products of metals, even though they are often the same compounds. This 190-year review of the literature on copper and its alloys integrates that information across a broad spectrum of interests that are all too frequently compartmentalized. The author discusses the various environmental conditions to which copper alloy objects may be exposed-including burial, outdoor, and indoor museum environments-and the methods used to conserve them. The book also includes information on ancient and historical technologies, the nature of patina as it pertains to copper and bronze, and the use of copper corrosion materials as pigments. Chapters are organized primarily by chemical corrosion products and include topics such as early technologies, copper chlorides and bronze disease, the chemistry and history of turquoise, Egyptian blue and other synthetic copper silicates, the organic salts of copper in bronze corrosion, and aspects of bronze patinas. A detailed survey of conservation treatments for bronze objects is also provided. Four appendixes cover copper and bronze chemistry, replication experiments for early pigment recipes, a list of copper minerals and corrosion products, and X-ray diffraction studies. |
