General Information

The Palm Tanager is medium-sized, widespread bird found from Mexico to Central America. Other common names include Green Jeans and Palmistes. There are four subspecies of the Palm Tanager.

Physical Description

The adult Palm Tanager averages 17 cm in length and 39 g. They are colored olive green with a dark purple tinge along the breast and upperparts, with the exception of the crown. The wings have a pole smoke gray pattern that is visible both perched and in flight. This species varies in plumage color by subspecies, sex and age. Females are commonly a paler color. Age and subspecies will vary in shade from dark olive green to light yellowish olive.

Diet

Palm Tanagers feed on a variety of small fruit but will also routinely eat nectar and insects. Fruit is consumed whole. Insects are plucked from leaves. Typically, this species forages high up in trees for food.

Habitat

This tanager is distributed from Mexico through Central America and into South America, going down as far as Paraguay and southern Brazil. They reside from sea level to 2200 m in elevation, with most numbers below 1200 m. They inhabit trees, especially palms, in semi open habits such as forest edges, second growth, clearings, savannahs, and areas of human habitation. They will also occur in the forest canopy.

Reproduction

The Palm Tanager hides its nest in dense foliage. The nest location that is most favorable is the inner depths of isolated palm trees at the base of the fronds, but they will also nest in isolated large trees with smaller crowns. In some cases, they have also nested in structures with exposed beams or crevasses under eaves. Both the males and females participate in building the cup-shaped nest. It is made of long broad blade grasses lined with fibers. The female gives birth to a clutch averaging two cream-colored eggs marked with brown, lilac or black blotches. She incubates them for a period of around 14 days. Both adults feed the nestlings. The young fledge the nest after about 17 days from hatching. Multiple broods are common, sometimes as many as four broods per season.
