When you own a dollar store one of the real keys to achieving success is to clearly understand both sales and dollar store profit levels for all of the departments in your store. Having this kind of data arms you with information about where you are making your biggest profits and where you need to focus effort on growing sales. Fortunately most dollar stores follow a fairly standard model when it comes to top selling departments. While there are exceptions, the top 5 departments will deliver exciting results for you too. Just be sure to understand your shoppers and their needs. Then provide the right products to meet those wants and needs.
Department #1 is groceries and snacks. When you own a dollar store you'll discover in good times and bad food sells. While there are obstacles such as tight dollar store profit margins to overcome when dealing with grocery items, shoppers will make purchases of food items from your store. Snacks are the same. Shoppers will be happy to discover you carry a wide assortment of candy and snack items in your store. They'll signal their satisfaction by making purchases.
Department #2 is party. Think of party products as consumables. Shoppers will return to your store every time they hold a party. As a result a well-stocked and displayed party department can become one of the top selling departments in your store. Not only that, but in general, party items offer excellent dollar store profit levels for your store.
Department #3 is health and beauty. For many who own a dollar store health and beauty will become the top selling department in the store. With such a wide range of in-demand consumable products it's easy to see why most dollar stores find health and beauty to be a real winner. This is another department where your buying skills are tested. Dollar store profit levels are tight on many of the items sold in this department.
Department #4 is cleaners and paper products. Sales from a well stocked department filled with household cleaners, paper products and cleaning accessories will amaze you. In fact providing a good assortment of quality items that are merchandised correctly will create sales to many of the shoppers who come through your store.
Department #5 is toys. Everyone loves toys! In addition to the core toy items, don't forget to stock toys for every season. In the spring add toys for the beach and garden. In the summer add water toys. In the fall start bringing in more of the indoor toys. In winter add toys and games to be given as gifts. A well managed toy department can become one of the top selling and most profitable departments in your store.
When you own a dollar store it is important to remember these rankings are not fixed in stone. They may vary, depending on your shoppers. Yet for most stores, you can expect to achieve solid results from these departments. Keep them well-stocked with in-demand merchandise. Be sure your buying is aligned to the wishes of your customers. Then watch as dollar store profit rolls in for your business.
