Do you have a one dollar bill in your pocket? Take it out and really look at it. This one dollar bill you are looking at, in its present design, came off the presses in 1957. This one dollar bill, called paper money, is in fact a cotton and linen blend. It has red and blue minute silk fibers running through it. So this paper money is actually made of material. We have all washed the dollar bill without it falling apart. The ink used to create this one dollar bill is a special blend of ink, we will never know the contents of this ink. Then it is starched to make it water resistant and pressed to give it that nice crisp look.
There are symbols overprinted on this dollar bill.
On the front of the bill, you will see the United States Treasury Seal.
On the top you will see the scales for a balanced budget.
In the center you have a carpenter's square, a tool used for an even cut.
Underneath is the Key to the United States Treasury.
This is pretty easy to figure out on the front of the one dollar bill but what is one the back of your bill is something we should all know about.
When you turn the dollar bill over, you will see two circles. The Great Seal of the United States is comprised of both circles together.
Benjamin Franklin and a group of men were asked by the First Continental Congress to come up with a Seal for the United States. This took Benjamin Franklin and this group of men four years to design this seal and another two years to get it approved as the Seal of the United States.
You will see a Pyramid on the left-hand circle. Take a good look at the face of the Pyramid for it is lit and the western side is dark. That symbolizes that this country, the United States of America, was just beginning. At that time we had not begun to explore the West or decide what could be done for Western Civilization.
The Pyramid is uncapped. This signifies that we, as a nation, were not even close to being finished. The ancient symbol for divinity, an all-seeing eye, is inside the capstone.
Benjamin Franklin believed that one man could not do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of God, could accomplish anything.
"IN GOD WE TRUST" is on this currency.
"God has favored our undertaking" is written in Latin, ANNUIT COEPTIS, and it is located above the Pyramid.
Below the Pyramid, written in Latin, is NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM. This means a new order has begun.
At the base of the pyramid is the Roman numeral for 1776 (MDCCLXXVI).
Look at the right-hand circle. Check it carefully. This symbol is on every National Cemetery in the United States of America. This symbol is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most heroes monuments.
Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States, and it is always visible whenever the President of the United States speaks, yet very few people know what the symbols mean.
The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons:
- First, he is not afraid of a storm; he is strong, and he is smart enough to soar above it.
- Secondly, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England.
The unsupported shield symbolizes that this country, the United States of America, can now stand on its own.
The white bar at the top of the shield signifies Congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as a country.
In the Eagle's beak you will read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM", which stands for "one nation from many people".
Above the Eagle, you have thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Again, we were coming together as one country.
The Eagle holds an olive branch in his left talon and arrows in his right talon. This signifies that this country wants peace but we will never be afraid to fight to preserve peace.
The Eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows.
A belief that the number 13 is an unlucky number has spread nearly worldwide. You will usually never see a room numbered 13, or any hotels or motels with a 13th floor.
But think about this, there were:
13 original colonies,
13 signers of the Declaration of Independence,
13 stripes on our flag,
13 steps on the Pyramid,
13 letters in the Latin above,
13 letters in "E Pluribus Unum",
13 stars above the Eagle,
13 bars on that shield,
13 leaves on the olive branch,
13 fruits, and if you look closely, 13 arrows.
And for minorities: the 13th Amendment.
Too many of our veterans have given up so much to ever let the meaning of our one dollar bill fade. In the past wars many American veterans remember coming home to an America that did not care and too many veterans never came home at all. Let us keep our veterans in our prayers and thoughts and our trust in our government. Our government is for the people, by the people and of the people.
God Bless America.
"Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves."
