Many have found the current economic problems just seem to continue with no real end in sight. Sure every once in awhile an indicator or two take a jump in the right direction. But for many the reality is there just are not jobs. As a result some are starting to see this as an opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of become their own boss. And as they examine their options some see starting and running a dollar store as the option they want to pursue. They feel if they cannot find a job working for someone else, why not work for themselves?
However running a dollar store in today's environment isn't as straightforward as it might appear. Sure, more and more shoppers are in the same position. They are looking for great bargains and they are also looking at dollar stores, discount stores and bargain departments as a means of easing the pressures today's economy places on their budgets. On the other hand more and more retailers are seeing these shoppers are a source of sales they want. So the competition starts.
Read on as I present some of the actions you must take to compete in today's marketplace. These actions are some of the most important to take as you start and grow your business.
* Sales must grow ever-higher. The competition for every shopper dollar is tough. Yet if you are to achieve success with dollar stores you must implement actions to continually grow sales. This is not a one-time action. It is part of opening a dollar store. It lasts from day one until you retire.
* You too must be a bargain hunter. Success in this business hinges on your ability to first locate and then negotiate outstanding deals. The bottom line is the very profitability of your store depends on you excelling at these important tasks. You must root out the best wholesale buying opportunities. Then you must negotiate wholesale prices which allow you to offer great products at outstanding prices.
* Costs must be cut to the bare bone. Virtually all costs are on the rise. When running a dollar store it is your challenge to cut every cost associated with your business as low as possible. Just remember; there are many costs that more than pay for themselves. Why cut or even eliminate a $1 cost that returns $3? Your challenge is to intelligently reduce spending.
* Outstanding customer service is now a basic requirement. Sure you can say you only own a dollar store. Sure you can say there are more bargain hunting customers than ever before. The reality is your shoppers are very well-informed and there are other dollar stores they can depend on for the items they must purchase. Put your store above the rest by providing excellent customer service each time a shopper visits your store.

Biography of the Dollar $11.99 Will the sun set on the greatest currency in the history of the world? For decades the dollar has been the undisputed champ. It’s not only the currency of America but much of the world as well, the fuel of global prosperity. As the superengine of the world’s only superpower, it’s accepted everywhere. When an Asian company trades with South America, those transactions are done in dollars, the currency of international business. But for how much longer? Economists fear America is digging a hole with an economy based on massive borrowing and huge deficits that cloud the dollar’s future. Will the buck be eclipsed by the euro or even China’s renminbi? Should Americans worry when the value of the mighty U.S. dollar sinks to par with the Canadian “loonie”? Craig Karmin’s in-depth “biography” of the dollar explores these issues. It also examines the green-back’s history, allure, and unique role as a catalyst for globalization, and how the American buck became so almighty that $ became perhaps the most powerful symbol on earth. Biography of the Dollar explores every aspect of its subject: the power of the Federal Reserve, the inner sanctums of foreign central banks that stockpile the currency, and the little-known circles of foreign exchange traders that determine a currency’s worth. It traces the dollar’s ascendancy, including one incredibly important duck-hunting trip and the world-changing Bretton Woods Conference. With its watermark, color-shifting inks, and a presidential portrait that glows under ultraviolet light, the dollar has obsessed foreign governments, some of which have tried to counterfeit it. Even Saddam Hussein, who insisted on being paid in euros for oil, had $750,000 in hundred-dollar bills when captured. Yet if a worldwide currency has enabled a global economy to flourish, it’s also allowed the United States to owe unbelievable, shocking amounts of money—paying hundreds of millions of dollars every single day just in interest on foreign debt; that’s raised concerns that the dollar standard may not be sustainable. Any threat to the dollar’s privileged status would do much more than hurt American pride. It would mean U.S. companies and citizens would not be able to borrow at the low rates they have become accustomed to. The dollar’s demise would impact the rest of the world, too, boosting the costs of trade and investment if no other currency was able to play the same crucial role. Ultimately the dollar system may weaken, but it should endure—a while longer, at least; it’s in few people’s interest to see it fail, and there is still no credible alternative. Biography of the Dollar is must reading for anyone who wants to understand what truly makes the world go ’round—and whether it will continue to spin the way we want it to. From the Hardcover edition. |

A Dollar Short $14.99 It isn't every day a movie star steals your husband. When that day comes for Chiffon Butrell, of Cayboo Creek, South Carolina, she looks to the Bottom Dollar Girls to help her out of one fine mess. As a waitress at the local Wagon Wheel restaurant, Chiffon pegs her fortunes to a winning entry in a local video store's Be-a-Movie-Star contest. But her celluloid dreams are dashed when her baby takes sick and her husband, Lonnie -- one fine specimen of Southern manhood -- heads for the Hollywood Hills solo. On set, he turns the head of leading lady Janie-Lynn Lauren, whose siren call is Oscar caliber. Back in Cayboo Creek, Chiffon manages to lose her temper and her job in quick succession -- only to discover that Lonnie's paycheck from the Nutra-Sweet plant has been forwarded to a California address. With three kids to feed, Chiffon comes up more than a dollar short. Her good friends try their best to pitch in. But there are too few hands to lend, what with Elizabeth and her husband, Timothy, expecting their first baby any day and the rest of the Bottom Dollar Girls knee-deep in their secret -- and possibly scandalous -- plan to raise money for the Cayboo Creek Senior Center. When a slick of Wesson Oil at the Winn-Dixie gets the better of Chiffon's ankle, there's just one thing to be done -- call on estranged older sister Chenille, who hails from Bible Grove, South Carolina. A prissy, fussy spinster prone to dressing her dog, Walter, in matching plaid "mother-son" outfits, Chenille is everything former beauty queen Chiffon detests. Suddenly the tabloid media gets wind of Janie-Lynn and Lonnie's torrid romance, landing sleepy Cayboo Creek on the star map. Under the glare of camera lights, the sisters must put aside their longtime grievances to forge a newfound relationship. As crisis reigns, Chenille is welcomed by the Bottom Dollar Girls for her cool head and quick thinking. And when Chenille runs into a little trouble of her own, she begins to see the future in friendship. A rollicking, hilarious novel about two sisters who are each one of a kind, A Dollar Short is a delicious page-turner worth every last cent. |

Dollar Daze: The Bottom Dollar Girls in Love $3.95 Moons and Junes are the flavors of the month for the Bottom Dollar Girls, whose sudden fondness for wooing and cooing has them in a "Dollar Daze," From the night of the Sweetheart Dance, love begins blooming all over Cayboo Creek. Though every rose must have its thorn, it's up to the Bottom Dollar Girls to follow their hearts. Leading the way is Attalee, soda jerk at the Bottom Dollar Emporium, who's so hot and heavy with her beau, Dooley, that the pair seems headed for the altar via Thrill Hill. Elizabeth is pining for her newlywed days when she felt more like a wife than a mother, while widowed Mavis has been up nights nursing a case of loneliness. Not so for newspaperwoman Birdie. "I'm glad my dating days are done," she claims, and Gracie Tobias agrees that she, too, is "done with romance." They couldn't be more wrong. When high school heartthrob Brewster Clark returns to Cayboo Creek, suddenly Mavis and Birdie are competing for the attention of a certain pair of emerald eyes. Then there's Rusty, a philosophical duct doctor who's a most unlikely gentleman to turn proper Gracie's head, until she finds that his charms work on her like the Fountain of Youth. "A match made in heaven," Attalee pronounces the couple, but has she spoken too soon? When it comes to love stories, "happily ever after" might always be the best ending, but one that can never be taken for granted. Traveling love's rocky road keeps the Bottom Dollar Girls asking, "How can you still believe in romance?" In "Dollar Daze," these best of friends through laughter and tears discover that endings sting, but the pain makes new beginnings that much sweeter. |

Everyone Else Must Fail $14.99 Karen Southwick’s unauthorized account provides the full story of Larry Ellison’s brilliant, controversial career. Ellison’s drive and fierce ambition created Oracle out of the dust and built it into one of America’s great technology companies, but his unpredictable management style keeps it constantly on the edge of both success and disaster. The hostile bid for PeopleSoft is just the most recent example. With one clever strategic move, Larry Ellison threw much of the business software field into play. The saying “It’s not enough that I succeed, everyone else must fail” has been so often used by or associated with Ellison that most people think it originated with him. It’s actually attributed to Genghis Khan, but it’s a dead-on way to describe not only the way Ellison thinks about competitors but the way he runs Oracle. His weapons are not marauding hordes, but Oracle’s possession of database technology that is crucial for keeping mission-critical information flows working at thousands of organizations, corporations, nonprofits, and government agencies. Inside Oracle, Ellison has time and again systematically purged key operating, sales, and marketing people who got too powerful for his comfort. Most notable was Ray Lane, Oracle’s president for nine years, who was widely credited with bringing order out of the chaos that was Oracle in the early nineties and growing it into a ten billion dollar company. Ellison got rid of the one key person who was building confidence with Wall Street, business partners, and customers that Oracle was no longer flying by the seat of its pants and had its act together. Ellison’s mania for absolute control and his inability to coexist with the very lieutenants who bring much-needed stability to the company have brought Oracle to the brink of collapse before, and may well do it again. Ellison is a throwback to an earlier, much more freewheeling version of capitalism, the kind practiced by the nineteenth-century robber barons who ran their companies as private fiefdoms. Larry Ellison is one of the most intriguing and dominant leaders of a major twenty-first-century corporation, and Everyone Else Must Fail raises the question of whether Oracle’s products and the reliance placed in them by so many are too important to be subject to the whims of one man. While giving credit to Ellison’s brilliance and devotion, the book sounds a warning about an ingenious man’s tendency to be his own company’s worst enemy. From the Hardcover edition. |
