Many types of Canadian silver coins and bullion have been a worth while and long sought after currency by numismatists and hobby coin collectors. This is because the Royal Canadian Mint prides itself in creating currency that is both beautiful and historically significant. Among the many different types of circulating and collectible silver coinage and bullion, those originating from Canada are some of the most popular today.
Here is an easy guide that showcases some of the popular silver bullion coins that are worth adding to your collection:
- The 1935 Voyageur Dollar - This was the very first Canadian silver coin that was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which came out in 1935. The obverse features the monarch at that time, King George V; and the reverse features a voyageur and an aboriginal that are paddling along on a birch canoe. The Northern Lights are represented by faint lines in the background. This was designed by Emanuel Hahn, and was the design used until 1986.
- 1947 Voyageur Dollar - There were ten different varieties of the 1947 Voyageur Canada Silver Dollar that were released, and they can be differentiated into three categories. The Pointed Seven, the Blunt Seven and the Maple leaf, each category having different styles themselves. The Pointed and the Blunt seven varieties only differed in the design of the number "7," but the Canadian Maple Leaf Silver coin issue stands out. This is because of India gaining its independence from the British Empire in 1947, which meant that the "INDIA:IMP:" part of the coin had to be removed. Before the dies could be created, the Canadian Mint decided to simply put a small maple leaf beside the mint year to indicate that the coin was actually released in 1948.
- The Arnprior Canadian silver coins of 1950-1952 - The dies that were being used to create these silver mints were slowly being changed because of the cleaning and polishing through the years. This resulted in different looking coin designs that were being produced each year. The water lines on the right hand side of the canoe found on the obverse were starting to fade; hence, there were some coins that were minted that only had partial lines on the side. Collectors decided that the coins that had these were to be collected separately and valued at a higher price.
There are numerous different types of commemorative Canadian silver dollars and bullion coins that were released, such as the following:
- The 1939 Royal Visit by Emanuel Hahn
- The 1949 Newfoundland Entry Into Confederation by Thomas Shingles
- The 1958 Cariboo Gold Rush by Stephen Trenka
- The 1964 Confederations Meetings by Dinko Vodanovic
- The 1967 Canadian Centennial by Alex Coville and Myron Cook
- The 1973 Royal Canadian Mint Press Centennial by Paul Cedarberg
- The 1974 Winnipeg Centennial by Paul Pederson
Silver Coins of 1981 - 1999: The turn of the century came into the market while there were two different qualities of the silver dollar; namely, the "silver proof coins" and the "brilliant uncirculated". The Proof quality had a frosted relief against a parallel line background, while the Brilliant Uncirculated quality had a brilliant relief on a brilliant background.
The above examples are only a taste of the types of Canadian silver coins worth adding to your coin collection, with so many others that you can learn about and explore. If you are planning to become a commemorative or numismatic silver coin collector, then learning about and acquiring these Canadian treasures are a must.
