So you have made the decision to open your own business. And after further investigation you decide a dollar store is the right choice for you. Making that decision is a moment almost no store owner will ever forget. Then there were the hours of looking until just the perfect location was found. There is another chance to briefly stop and gather in the fact that this will soon be your own business location.
But then there is the overwhelming thought that the planning and preparation must start immediately. After all, with lease paper signed, the expenses will soon start to mount. The sooner you can throw open the doors and welcome your shoppers the better. The sooner those shoppers start to make purchases the sooner you will be able to start covering some or all of those expenses. Then you begin to think about the dollar store merchandise you need to locate and order. And all of a sudden you realize you really cannot complete all of your ordering until you make a final decision about the merchandise layout for your new store.
It is almost a game of one-million questions as you begin to decide what products will go where, and how much room to allocate to each dollar store merchandise category. In this article I present 5 tips to help you begin to make decisions about the merchandise layout for your store. With the layout defined you can move on to determine exactly how much of each dollar store item to order in preparation for the start-up of your business.
#1) Run aisles from the front-to-back of your store.
The main aisles of gondola fixtures should run from front-to-back. This provides easy employee access and view from the front of the store where your cash registers will be located.
#2) Run shorter aisles at the front from side-to-side
As you move to the front of the store you will find the right spot for cash registers. Left over space must be allocated for additional displays. Front of store displays closest to the walls will likely include more gondola fixtures. Install shorter fixtures and run them parallel with the front of the store. Once again this facilitates easy employee viewing from the cash register area.
#3) Include space for lobby displays
If room allows be sure to include space in the lobby for larger, bulk dollar store merchandise displays. Shoppers just entering your store will be impressed and drawn to these giant displays.
#4) Include space along front windows for displays
Don't block windows with fixtures. Leave room for large bulk displays for shoppers inside and outside of your store to see. Try to include displays of the latest arrivals as well as the hottest selling dollar store merchandise.
#5) Leave room for extra impulse displays around cash registers
Your merchandise layout strategy must include plenty of room for impulse sales right at the cash registers. Allow room for smaller displays and racks of the newest and best selling products.
