Ven y Dime $10.38 Fonovisa Records has described as this 2007 release as a 25th anniversary CD for los Rieleros del Norte, which means that the long-running norteño group would have been formed in 1982. However, 1979 -- not 1982 -- has often been cited as the year in which los Rieleros' original lineup first got together in Pecos, TX. So if 1979 was the year of los Rieleros' formation, Ven y Dime ("Come and Tell Me") would actually be a 28th anniversary CD. At any rate, Ven y Dime is a fine addition to their catalog. After so many years in the trenches, it isn't hard for some groups to become bored. But there are no signs of boredom on Ven y Dime -- not at all. Los Rieleros sound as enthusiastic and as focused as ever on this 37-minute disc, tackling polkas ("Mi Linda Tierra," "Defiendeme," "Un Juego," "Leña al Fuego") and a few corridos ("El 3 Dedos," "Vengo a Llevarme a Esa Joven"), as well as Tex-Mex-style cumbia ("Muñeca Preciosa"). Meanwhile, "Pena en Cuesta Arriba" is a textbook example of regional Mexican music incorporating doo wop harmonies. Many times, regional Mexican groups that incorporate doo wop are doing so in an overtly Latin pop fashion; that happens not only in norteño, but in banda and duranguense as well (not to mention grupero and Tejano). But on Ven y Dime, los Rieleros never sound like a group that plays "norteño for people who don't like norteño." They are a hardcore norteño group, not a crossover norteño group. That outlook has been serving them well for many years and continues to serve them well on the engaging Ven y Dime. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

One Dime at a Time $12.78 The Steep Canyon Rangers are one of a number of contemporary bluegrass bands that have worked hard to expand tradition by writing lots of new material. They continue this undertaking on One Dime at a Time, a new collection of 11 songs with one being an instrumental. While all of the band's members -- guitarist Woody Platt, mandolinist Mike Guggino, banjoist Graham Sharp, fiddler Nicky Sanders, and bassist Charles Humphrey -- are fine musicians; this band specializes in performing as a unit. The Steep Canyon Rangers, then, concentrate on the song, delivering fun numbers like the title cut and the mysterious "Green-Eyed Lady" in a brief three minutes. The band also like to perform songs that tell a story. One standout, Charles Humphrey's "The Ghost of Norma Jean," first gains attention by telling a good story, and next, by slowing down the tempo on the choruses for some nice, bluesy harmony. The song is also unique in following up another story-song, "Norma Jean," from the band's last album, The Steep Canyon Rangers. On songs like this, synchronicity is essential, and it shows that the band has been together long enough (five years) to play well as a unit. The band also shows off its vocal finesse on "I Can't Sit Down," a gospel number performed a cappella. One Dime at a Time is a solid release and a good introduction to the bluegrass sounds of the Steep Canyon Rangers. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi Performers: Graham Sharp - Banjo, Bass (Vocal), Baritone (Vocal), Guitar, Vocals; Mike Guggino - Vocal Harmony, Mandolin, Tenor (Vocal), Harmony Vocals, Vocals; Nicky Sanders - Vocal Harmony, Fiddle, Harmony Vocals, Vocals; Woody Platt - Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Guitar (Rhythm), Baritone (Vocal), Vocals, Guitar; Charles Humphrey III - Bass |

Ain't Gotta Dime $15.18 The rough-and-tumble vocal style of Boo Boo Davis recalls the unrefined gruffness of a Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals, or Elmore James. His harmonica is not as potent as peers or predecessors, but it is finely honed and tasteful enough to rank him as one of the better modern-day players. This set of originals based in the electric urban Chicago blues tradition should set listeners on their collective ear just enough to notice that he's an honest, get-down performer who takes no prisoners, belting out his songs in total confidence. With help from drummer John Gerritse, electric guitarist Jan Mittendorp, and no bassist, Davis romps and stomps along with a no-nonsense Mississippi Delta foundation, a slightly funky stance, and an authentic, uncut soul. His themes are typical, though the stomping "Silvermine" is tough as can be in a wishful-thinking manner, "Standing at the Fishbank" is a shuffle blues that refers to hanging out on a riverbank trying to catch a meal while perhaps also being at the corner ATM, and "My Baby Got Me Fixed" is a foot-sure tune that seems happy in an unwieldy situation. "There's a Roach Crawlin" is a hot-assed rock song where Davis is bugged that "the roach won't leave me alone." "Ain't Gotta Dime" is steady as a rock and the slower "Ten Thousand Dollars" features the best and most pungent harmonica of Davis, both songs immersed in the universal dilemma of having it all or being dead broke, with nothing in between. Then there's the downhearted "Cryin Blues," where Davis' sour harmonica is heard perhaps to its detriment, and "Got My Loving, Now You're Gone" is in a similar mood. More upbeat and positive, the novelty "Cake Lady" has Davis enjoying his woman's baking skills alongside some fine slide guitar work from Mittendorp, and "Man Who Be Around" emphasizes that Davis is always present and accounted for, no matter the situation, in a reply to skittish previous suitors. As first takes in the studio, there's a rawness and even an occasional hard rock feeling due to the distorted vocal production values, apparently intentional. You can identify influences of the Hooker brothers, Taylor's inimitable slide work by Mittendorp, and a contemporary quality that does not stray into smoother soul. If you like your uptown blues unfettered, in the moment, and untreated, Boo Boo Davis is likely your man. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Boo Boo Davis - Harmonica, Vocals; Jan Mittendorp - Guitar |

Dime Store Hot Dance $14.38 A variety of overlapping jazz-oriented dance bands from 1929-1930 whose records were released by the Banner, Dorn, Oriole, Sterling, Domino, Crown, Apex, Cameo, and Jewel labels are heard on this high-quality CD of rarities. Such fine studio players as trumpeter Tommy Gott, Andy Sannella (on clarinet and alto), pianist Russ Carlson, and Larry Abbott on reeds are among the few musicians who are identified, and most of the songs (which include "I Wanna Go Back to Indiana," "Cat's Kittens," "Pa's Old Hat," and "When the Moon Shines Down on Sunshine and Me") are long forgotten. However, the music is excellent, with clean swinging ensembles and concise meaningful solos; even most of the vocals are not too difficult to take (and they tend to only be a chorus long). The style of music has long been extinct but it still has its appeal, and this collection is very well done. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: George Hamilton Green - Marimba, Drums; Joe Green - Marimba, Drums; Al Lynch - Vocals; Andy Sannella - Reeds, Clarinet, Flute, Sax (Tenor), Sax (Alto); Arthur Fields - Vocals; Arthur Schutt - Banjo, Double Bass, Piano, Drums; Bob Effros - Trumpet; Charlie Butterfield - Trombone; Irving Kaufman - Vocals; |
