It is always for the best if you price your coins appropriately.
There are lots of guides and sources that can be of great help to numismatist collectors, old or new, in determining the value and worth of the coins in their possession.
To conclude the prices of each coin, the following are the basic values of each cent, penny, or dime in the market.
The United States wheat-cent, circulated issues
The value of these coins created before 1950's, or those that are dated 1940's, are currently being purchased or assessed by coin dealers for two cents each and above. Those made before 1940's command a much higher price from a few more cents to a few dollars
The silver-dollars
Silver-dollars from the United States, especially those made before 1930's, have almost an ounce of silver in them. These coins are among the favorites of coin collectors and could be sold for more than their actual value in silver especially if they are circulated lightly, undamaged or not worn severely.
The Susan B. Anthony dollars
If by chance you happen to get one of these as a change, the value is more than a buck. Proof Susan B. Anthony dollars also command a higher price as they are not easy to find since they are not usually being circulated but mostly sold to coin dealers or collectors.
The bicentennial issues - Quarters, dollars and halves
There are about billions of these coins made out and because there are so plenty of them, their worth is usually just face value, it's all about supply and demand. There are coin dealers however who pay ten percent of the face value as premium for circulated bicentennial coins, and a few dollars more for those that are not circulated well.
The Error coins
If you are coin collector for at least a year you probably knew about these coins but if you are just beginning to collect believe it or not, there are two-headed coins out there yet for discovery or already on possession of a dealer / collector being sold. Basically, these are coins with two different designs on each face. These coins were made in error and were not discovered until the year 2000. This type of coin is usually called "mules".
If your collections consist of world coins you need Standard Coins Catalog, it is an excellent coins price guide which are considered the bible of the numismatists. Just like coins if you also collect stamps you need Scott stamp catalogue to value you stamps collections.

Dime (United States Coin) $63.73 The dime is a coin worth ten cents or one tenth of a United States dollar. The dime is the smallest in diameter and the thinnest of all U.S. coins currently minted for circulation. The 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, is featured on the obverse of the current design, while a torch, oak branch, and olive branch covering the motto E pluribus unum are featured on the reverse. The dimes value is labeled as one dime, since the term dime also applies to a unit of currency worth 10 cents or 1/10 of a dollar. The dime was commissioned by the Coinage Act of 1792, and production began in 1796. A feminine head representing Liberty was used on the front of the coin, and an eagle was used on the back. The front and back of the dime used these motifs for three different designs through 1837. The composition and diameter of the dime have changed throughout its mintage. Initially the dime was 0.75 inch (19 millimeters) wide, but it was changed to its present size of 0.705 inch (17.91 millimeters) in 1828. The composition (initially 89.24 percent silver and 10.76 percent copper) remained constant until 1837, when it was altered to 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. Encyclopedia Small Silver Coins $51.11 Softcover book - The latest incarnation of Brother Can You Spare A Dime? - Modern Dime Size Silver Coins of the World with Footnotes to History has been published in a Third Edition. This work, a many year project to study these coins as miniature engravings of Art and History, was first published in 1997. Several years later a CD-rom was produced as the Second Edition. The author won a Numismatic Literary Guild Award for this Edition. The Third Edition, a 600 page book with over a thousand enlarged scans of the coins from the mid 1800's to 1970 show coins from around the world - Afghanistan to Yemen. These coins were the money of the people at the time; one would represent a days work, purchase a meal or a night's entertainment. Kings, Queens and Statesmen are portrayed on dozens, with little biographies of many. More than a numismatic book, this anthology is a fine way to develop a better understanding of money in use during the previous two centuries. A great addition to your numismatic library. |
