Best under $200 machine?
If you want to save money but STILL get quality, the Makita BDF453HW 18v model is probably your best bet. Almost EVERYONE who uses it raves about it.
Why?
It is light, it's got PLENTY of power, is well balanced and all for under $200. Not to mention, Makita is one of the best brands out there-so you know you are getting quality.
Best REALLY SMALL project machine?
The Hitachi 12v--this is one of the best cordless drills for $75 there are. This is NOT going to be found at any construction sites-it can't handle metal or steel. But for the majority of homeowners it does the trick.
Specifications
It actually gets up to 230 pounds of torque-a VERY HIGH number for a 12 volt machine. The batteries last a long time, and it includes plenty of features-and you CANNOT beat the$75.
For BIG projects
I would recommend the Milwaukee 18v for construction workers or more serious machinists. It's NOT cheap--around $400--but it's one of the most powerful and RELIABLE drills on the market.
Specifications
It produces almost 500 lbs of torque--virtually unheard of-and it will last as long as any machine out there. The chuck is 100% metal--meaning the bits are NOT going anywhere.
Oh yeah--and it goes up to 1700 RPMs--one of the highest numbers out there. But it does have a lower gear that only goes to 500.
And it's got a SUPER SOLID feel to it--much more so than other machines. This is one of the-if not THE-- best cordless drills on the market.
