Commemorative Coins
When the Roman emperor Titus defeated Jerusalem in A.D.70 he was so proud of it that he had special coins created to honor the event. It was not the first time in history that coins have been used to remind others of significant occurrences, past or current, however it was one of the most noteworthy in the history of the Jews. Over the two millennia that have passed since that moment in time, scores of commemorative coins have been circulated all throughout the world in order to honor people, places, and historic events which may otherwise have been forgotten.
The United States was a latecomer in the undertaking of issuing commemorative coins. However at that time the country was only slightly more than one hundred years old when the first of such coins was created in 1892. The occasion that was honored on those coins was the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus exactly four hundred years earlier. It was a notable beginning to a series of commemorations that has been continued ever since. Commemorative coins are outstanding in that they are seldom seen in normal circulation. Most of the hundreds of types which have been designed in this country during the previous 100 years were created in controlled amounts and exclusively available as souvenirs and to collectors. In several other countries commemorative coins are utilized in daily circulation right alongside the standard national coinage. Now that the 50 States quarters coins are being released, we are starting to notice the kind of interest and collecting activity that can be developed by distributing commemorative coins.
That activity is bringing new awareness to the many older issues of commemoratives which were hitherto undiscovered by the majority of Americans. It is now starting to be a particularly enjoyable challenge to research old, new and circulating commemoratives to learn more concerning the history and artistry of our country.
Anyone planning to pursue collecting commemorative coins should begin by reviewing a listing of all the various kinds that have been released since 1892. There is a helpful listing in the Guide Book of United States Coins (The Red Book), and there are numerous beneficial publications on the topic as well. Commemorative Coins of the U.S. by Q. David Bowers is one of the most thorough and interesting. Those books and others can usually be located in local public libraries. After reviewing the scope of the commemorative field you can better ascertain which topics appeal the most to you, and start building your collection.
It is no longer fashionable to try saving one of each date, mintmark and type of the hundreds of available pieces. That form of collecting has become outdated with the advent of so many modern kinds that have been issued since 1982. Modern day collectors generally center their focus on either the older "Classic" pieces, or the "Modern" issues but not normally both. The most preferred approach to collecting now is to put together a set of interesting styles or designs all in the same grade of condition. Each person's spending plan can dictate whether his or her coins should be "About Uncirculated" or in the "gem" class. The difference in price can vary by a factor of five to ten times based upon condition.
For various reasons enthusiasm in collecting commemorative coins appears to work in cycles of popularity. During the last "hot" market, costs increased to a level that kept many from collecting. Now that has changed considerably. Costs are at new reduced and quite appealing levels. In the opinion of many, there has never been a better time to turn to this exciting area of interest. The government issues two to three different kinds of commemorative coins each year for sale to collectors. You can find out more regarding them, and even order the current issues from their usmint.gov website site. Beauty, historical events, famous people, eagles, animals and even some people that should never have been depicted on these coins, are all topics that appeal to collectors of the amazing world of commemorative coins. They are coins like none others in United States numismatics, and hold something of interest for everyone.

Daddy Dates $5.99 One day motivational leader Greg Wright realized that the four set of pretty young eyes under his own roof were looking to Dad to be strong, fearless, and wise. The reality was, the lone male in an all-girl household ("heck, even the dog was female") was only thirty years old and felt like he had been shoved into the deep end of the estrogen pool without swimming lessons. That's when the love-struck father of four gorgeous pre-teens started searching for a plan for how to be a successful Dad, and did what any sensible guy would do. He bailed. Not only on his family, but into the woods, to seek a "solution." Daddy Dates is an entertaining and practical look at how one American father found his sea legs and is navigating through the tricky waters of parenting girls. In this game-changing book, Greg shares his easy-to-follow secrets for how married and single dads can go beyond high-fiving to bridge the gender gap and become the clued-in man who knows his daughter best. Dads have more influence on their girls than anyone. Learn what makes your daughter tick, how to talk to her effectively and connect more profoundly, at any age. If being their hero is your mission, it's not impossible. Daddy Dates is your road map to get there. "Hi honey. It's Daddy. I'm calling to see if you'd like to go on a date with me tonight." "Um, yes, Daddy I think I would." It's a phone call Greg Wright has made over and over again. By age thirty, Greg was the overwhelmed father of four beautiful little girls, with one thought running through his mind over and over again: Don't Screw Up. Daddy Dates is about a guy taking his best shot at being a successful dad by trying to know his girls- really know their fears, dreams, and opinions- and how he stumbled across an incredible strategy to do that with daughters of any age or stage. This funny, insightful, and relatable book poses the wildly original concept that should be a "duh" for most dads- but isn't. In order to raise a confident woman-to-be, show your daughter what it feels like to be treated with love, respect, and true interest by a man who loves her. Daddy Dates is not another "how to" book from a parenting expert. It's a personal, eye-opening, often humorous look at an Average Joe's intentional pursuit of his daughter's hearts and minds, and the love-inspired steps he is taking to solidify Dad's place in each of their lives, forever. Whether married or single, Daddy Dates can help you better connect with virtually all of the females in your life. Using Greg's communication cues, you'll be blown away by what you'll learn about your child, and how you can make a powerful, lasting difference- especially during her rocky teenage years. Daddy Dates is about one thing- becoming her hero- one date at a time. |

Bad Dates $13.88 Comedy Character: 1 female Interior Set "And then I realize, in this sort of strange, hallucinatory moment, that the bug guy is looking kind of good, and the things he's saying about bugs are really kind of fascinating and it is then that I realized that maybe it has been too long since I've been on a date."--So confesses a single mother and self-described restaurant idiot-savant in this thoroughly charming and slyly sweet one-woman play by the author of The Butterfly Collection and Spike Heels. This idiosyncratic journey of self-discovery involving the Romanian mob, a Buddhist rainstorm, a teenage daughter, shoes, and a few very bad dates enjoyed an extended run Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons starring Julie White. |

A Dictionary of Dates $35.37 PREFACE - THE aim of the compilers of this volume has been to give every date likely to be of service to the general reader, while getting rid of the superfluities which make the typical datebook too bulky for easy use. It is not intended to be in any way a substitute for dictionaries of biography or the books of information on special subjects, which are otherwise accounted for in the series. It only supplies the names of personages, for instance, where they mark a distinct point in time-as Caxton, Ket of Kets Rebellion, or Wagner-or where they enter into a chronological group, such as the Kings, Popes, Archbishops, Authors, etc.. who mark the record. That is, it is a book to save memory on the side which most requires economy and gains least by unusual effort one to annihilate as far as possible that confusion of successive events and relative epochs to which we are all liable. Those who have on occasion been at a loss to remember the exact concurrence of Louis the Fourteenth in France and Charles the Second in England, or the months between the Battle of Minden and the Battle of Pfaffendorf, or the temporal gap between Descartes and Hegel, will find chronology made easy by a working acquaintance with these pages. Take the case of London alone the Bishops, the Bridge, the City, the County the date of the first Lord Mayor, the Fire, the Plague, the Treaties and the University-all these have their reference while Westminster demands some half - dozen separate entries. Even as it is, the necessity of drawing the line between the indispensable and the seldom used date has in some pages, it may be, led to a doubtful omission or insertion. The publishers are only too conscious that thisfirst attempt to issue a useful dictionary of dates for the use of readers of Everymans Library is not by any means perfect, but they hope that, as in the natural course of time the book will require revision, they will have many practical and useful suggestions from their readers, which they hope to incorporate in future editions. BEDFORD STREET, Scptctnber 191 I. vii NOTE TO THE 1924 EDITION THE occurrence of the Great War, with its repercussions throughout the world, its epic battles, its profound effect on old polities and on old territorial limits, renders an Appendix to this dictionary indispensable. As far as possible important events correlated with those in the old edition have been included, and the general principle of selection implicit in that edition preserved. No dictionary of dates, however, which purports to mention events up to the very month of publication can be expected to present recent events in their ideal relative importance to those long anterior. The risk, indeed, of getting present events out of focus is inseparable from such a dictionary, and therefore many which might otherwise have found a place have been ignored. The period covered in the Appendix is from the beginning of 1913 to the autumn of 1923. For convenience of arrangement the eve |
