Less conspicuous but still cheap - Air Berlin and Austrian Airlines
Dear deal hunters, when it comes to low-budget flight offers, many tend to think immediately about such brands as Ryanair or Wizzair whereas it is worthwhile to devote some attention to other carriers which may not be present in the headlines to such an extent as the noisy PR stunt giant Ryanair. Let us take up the subject of two carriers from German-speaking countries and examine what they have to offer for us – low-budget travellers: Air Berlin and Austrian Airlines.
The name of the first-mentioned carrier betrays its origin, at least in a way. Indeed this carrier has its headquarters in Berlin nowadays but the company was formed in Oregon. At present, the lion's share of Air Berlin's most crucial airports are located in Germany, a country which plays an important role on the company's route network but Air Berlin is not a good choice only in terms of flying across Germany. The route network comprises over 150 destinations and includes some
long-haul flights to Africa or the United States. The numerous destinations, conveniently located ports of departure and affordable fares make Air Berlin a good choice for European travellers.
Just to give you an example: a fare Vienna – Cairo in October 2010 will cost you below €200. That could be attractive for travellers from both Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Last but not least, Air Berlin launches from time to time rather comprehensive promotions and we do not have to look far away to find one – recently the carrier in question had a massive sale where as many as 1 millions seats allegedly were on sale. While it is difficult to verifie the figures – one thing is sure - air fares across Europe, e.g. Milan – Dusseldorf, starting at €29 are not that difficult to get hold of.
The second carrier we would like to briefly discuss is Austrian Airlines. Now, this carrier may not fall into the category of low-budget airlines but it does not mean we should stay clear of it. First of all, just to give you an idea of Austrian Airlines – it is a scheduled airline present at the aviation market since 1957. It has a route network which covers all of Europe plus some more distant airports, such as Toronto, Dominicana, Tokyo or Tripoli; all in all some 117 destinations.
So the route network is comparable to that of Air Berlin whereas the average prices are decisively higher but it does not always have to be the case. The keyword is «Red Ticket». This is a sort of standing promotion with fares between cca €60 and €200 for round-trips from Austrian Airlines' hubs to many European destinations and with suitably higher prices for more remote destinations. In other words, we who prefer not to empty our wallets, should look out for the «Red Ticket» banner when entering the home page of this carrier.
We hope that this short introduction to Air Berlin and Austrian Airlines will help all of you who hitherto have not flied with these carriers.
