Civil War Autographs From Gettysburg

Collecting Civil War autographs is a great way to connect and remember the valiant soldiers who had a key role in American history. Autographs from the famous and not-do-famous individuals from the North and South are available for collectors of Civil War memorabilia. Of particular interest are autographs from soldiers and officers from the Battle of Gettysburg.

Gettysburg was a battle that rivals the imagination in both intensity and enormity. The clash between the Northern Union Army and the Southern Confederate Army lasted four days. Over 35,000 soldiers from both sides were killed. This was more than the casualties suffered through the Korean War or Vietnam War.

The Gettysburg clash began when General Henry Heth took a contingency of his confederate troops into the town to find shoes for his weary and worn soldiers. A chance encounter between his men and Union soldiers escalated into a monumental four-day battle. Confederate military hero Ambrose Powell Hill was the officer who initiated the first formal attack at Gettysburg.

Joshua Chamberlin is remembered for his successful defense against the confederate attack of the Little Round Top, a key defensive position for the Union army.  Confederate leader James Longstreet effectively fought six full Union divisions with only eleven brigades.

J.E.B. Stuart fought Union army troops, including George Custer along Cemetery Ridge.  Towards the end of the battle, James Longstreet gave permission to George Pickett to conduct an assault on Union lines.  Pickett led 12,500 Confederate soldiers in action that is famously known as Pickett's Charge.  The cost of causalties was devastating and the confederate army retreated into Virginia.  Union General George Meade was the victor at Gettysburg.

The battle at Gettysburg will forever be remembered as the site where the epic confrontation between the North and South took place.   Civil War autographs from Gettysburg serve to commemorate and honor the brave soldiers who fought for the causes of the North and South.
