THE GAMES: Proposed by Rev. Ashley Cooper the first ever sporting contest was organized in 1930 at Canada by a key Canadian Athlete, Bobby Robinson to bring together the members of the British Empire. 400 athletes from 11 countries participated in the first games. With the exception of the war years 1942 and 1946, these games have been held regularly 18 times at four yearly intervals. Since 1978 the game is called the Commonwealth Games. Shera - The Mascot is the most visible face of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. His name comes from the Hindi word ‘Sher' – meaning tiger. Shera symbolizes the modern Indian, an achiever with a positive attitude, a global citizen but justifiably proud of his nation's ancient heritage, a fierce competitor but with integrity and honesty. In Indian mythology, the tiger is the vehicle, which Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Shakti (or female power) and the vanquisher of evil, rides into combat, especially in her epic and victorious battle against Mahishasur, a dreaded demon. After the closing ceremony, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) flag is lowered, wrapped, and as part of the Delhi 2010 Flag Handover Ceremony, it is passed onto the city of Glasgow, officially now the new hosts of the Games. Commonwealth Games $117.9 The Commonwealth Games is a multinational, multisport event. Held every four years, it involves the elite athletes of the Commonwealth of Nations. Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5,000 athletes. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organisation that is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games. The first such event, then known as the British Empire Games, was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and assumed the current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978. As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball. There are currently 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the Games.
