Commemorative Quarter

The United States Mint is tasked with providing the coins used in everyday commerce by people across the country. Congress decided, on the heels of the fantastically popular "State Quarters" series, to once again change the design on the reverse (or "tails" side) of the Quarter, this time celebrating various National Parks, National Monuments, National Historical Sites, wildlife refuges, and recreation areas. Although the formal name of the series is the America the Beautiful Quarters series, most of the sites chosen are under the control of the National Parks Service, so many collectors now refer to this as the National Parks Quarters series.
Congress decided that this series would honor one site in each of the fifty states, along with sites in Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With five coin designs being released per year, the America the Beautiful series will be minted over eleven years. The first coins were issued in 2010, and the final design will be produced in 2021.
Rather than releasing all of the designs for a year at once, the U.S. Mint has decided that it will release one design at a time throughout the year, with release ceremonies being anticipated in or close to the location celebrated on the coin. The first coin was released April 19, 2010, and featured Hot Springs National Park. Coins will commemorate such locations as Yellowstone National Park, Vicksburg National Military Park, Denali National Park and Preserve, Kisatchie National Forest, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and War in the Pacific National Historical Park (in Guam).
Will the coins be popular? The State Quarters series is credited with bringing thousands of new collectors into the numismatic community. Collectors eagerly awaited each release, and the coins were often snatched up and inserted into folders, albums, and even specially designed foam maps which permitted the quarters to be placed into ports which displayed each coin within (or close to) the borders of the corresponding state. Each of these storage and display options is also available for the National Parks Quarters. Many members of the general public are not even aware of the new quarters, some even confusing the new issues with the old State Quarters series. But as the new coins become more commonly encountered in circulation, it is expected that collectors will begin acquiring the new quarters as they are issued, and will pick up the older coins from circulation or coin shops.
So what will the results of issuing the new quarters be? In addition to awareness of the sites commemorated on the coins and the regional pride resulting from their issue, it is expected that the popularity of coin collecting as a hobby will rise. In addition, the U.S. Mint is expected to show a profit as the result of the seigniorage realized from the mark-ups charged to collectors and investors who purchase collectible grade coins directly from the government.
So give your pocket change more than a cursory glance and discover some of the newly released twenty-five cent coins. Then close your eyes and take a thirty second vacation as you imagine yourself in Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite, or the fifty-three other locations to be celebrated on the National Parks Quarters.
Arthur Haule began collecting coins on Christmas Day, in 1963, when his Grandparents gave him two Lincoln Cent folders with a couple dozen "pennies" in the slots. He has been fascinated with coins ever since. Whether actually working on his collection; attending local coin shows, Texan Numismatic Association, or American Numismatic Association conventions; reading books describing the history of U.S. coinage; or reading one of several coin magazines which he devours monthly; coins are always vying for attention with whatever project on which he is working. Art has produced a more detailed discussion of the National Parks Quarter series for the Internet which can be found at http://www.squidoo.com/nationalparkquarter.
