Dayan Jayatilleka was taken at age 7 to Egypt. Foreign tours are not customary for that age group.

 

Dayan’s stunning “Behind-the-Looking-Glass” trajectory is easiest understood through his father Mervyn de Silva who took him out to Egypt from Sri Lanka. The overseas conferences that journalist Mervyn de Silva was asked to cover from time to time for his newspaper were ones for statesmen as in the case of the Non-Aligned Movement conferences.

 

Mervyn de Silva entered journalism on chance rebound. Known at school and afterwards as Aandaya (Sinhalese for "sharper" or "brigand") he failed Law College entry exams and pursued higher education elsewhere. After graduation he ended up at a newspaper of the family of timber merchant Tudugalage Don Philip Wijewardena that wanted yellow journalism to punch contenders for power at Independence.

 

Don Philip's son Don Richard (his brothers too were registered at birth with the Portuguese-era prefix) was dispatched for education to the UK. There Don Richard qualified in law but was tasked to fill in as the island nation’s Press Baron by the Wijewardena family.

 

Mervyn de Silva gained writing skills through serving the Wijewardena clan in their brawls for power. Then Mervyn de Silva ventured outwards into cross-border brigandry.

 

He would, for example, write articles against Germany. Later, he would send in his passport for a German visa. In the hope that Germany would be spared unfair press comments, the embassy would come forward and offer the media man an expenses-paid trip.

 

Once in Germany, Mervyn would have the Foreign Office schedule him an appointment with the secret service. Through previous sponsorships he had learnt to qualify for second or third temporary monthly salary without signing a pay-slip.

 

In this role of a brigand or vagabond, Mervyn would not expect to gain the acclaim of an only son who was brought up in school in normal circumstances. So he had to make sure that Dayan accepted his life-style.

 

Mervyn had to do this while the child was malleable. Dayan's trip at age 7 illustrates his father's efforts to make him walk sideways just as the crab expects of its young.

 

In the fullness of time Dayan went into cross-border activity with an inheritance.  Dayan’s zigzags have included (1) mouthing Ché Guevara-type phrases to compete with student leaders and popular icons such as Richard de Zoysa. These phrases even caused Dayan to hide out through the kindness of Chandrika Bandaranaike's husband (himself later liquidated by jealous proxies just before luncheon with US consul Ed Marks) while Leftists were detained by the J R Jayewardene government, some betrayed by Dayan (2) When he emerged he went onwards on US Embassy contract with his Ché phrases to infiltrate the Cuban Embassy officials for the dollar.

 

(3) Dayan rose above the waterline in public when he drifted to the successor to Right-wing J R Jayewardene government, the Premadasa government, to take up the position of Presidential Advisor. There, famed US asset Bradman Weerakoon also served as Presidential Advisor. These two advisors served at the chronic moment when  the Premadasa government supplied anti-government militants with army weaponry, vehicles and Rs 75 million in taxpayer money.  The vouchers for release of this money to the LTTE's Anton Balasingham and Lawrence Thillagar were signed by Treasury Secretary Ramalingam Paskaralingam.

 

In the service of the queer trio of Premadasa, Paskaralingam and their new asset Prabhakaran (dubbed the 3 P’s by the late Lalith Athulathmudali) was Dr P B Jayasundera who had been brought in from the Central Bank. In this queer service was also Dr Lloyd Fernando, a fast-talking bank clerk unionist who pranced through scholarships to National Planning Director (he was in Premadasa's command room when the news of Athulathmudali's liquidation arrived.)

 

From service in Colombo, (4) Dayan went cross border once more to serve as a Cabinet minister with the Varatharaja Perumal make-believe government that had unilaterally declared Independence in Jaffna. Perumal collapsed and after small-change duties (5) he arose anew, probably with Susantha Goonetileka as talent scout, to the position of the Popular Alliance government’s ambassador to Geneva.

 

There Dayan tried to talk his way into the confidence of the Russian mission. However, that was his first major fatality. The Russian’s security check in Geneva would disclose that Dayan had served as a US asset. As for the US, that country's intelligence was in touch and not dismayed by its asset's crusade in Geneva human rights parlays though this time against the militants whom he had supported when President Premadasa’s armed them.

 

A second blow arrived, however, due to Dayan having twisted himself into pathological condition. Dayan’s barking attacks earned dismay in Geneva and it earned the termed "Rotweiler Diplomacy". This bluster touched on Palestinians and raised the hackles of the Israeli mission.

 

(5) Dayan had been writing profusely in Geneva to convey the brilliance he had accumulated through his father’s collection of complementary hardcover books. Dayan began creating and circulating self-promotional work by email from Geneva at the expense of the Sri Lankan taxpayer (a gross violation of regulations) in the hope of winning favour and crossing over to a UN body in Geneva or thereabouts. Yet, unlike Gamini Corea or Lakshman Kadirgamar, respectively Secretary-Generals of UNCTAD and WIPO, an invitation did not arrive for Dayan. In most modest account, he had had his intelligence cover blown by the Russia-China group that for its part supported Sri Lanka long before (and after) his Geneva's human-rights bluster.

...Having my essay on Ché’s 40th death anniversary featured in the Cuban CP Central Committee’s Granma and praised for “having seen deeply into the mind of Ché” by two who knew him up close (Prof Emeritus Miguel Alfonso Martinez who was at Ché’s side during his historic New York trip and interviewed by Benecio de Toro for the Soderbergh movie, and Prof Jean Ziegler, Ché’s designated companion during his 12 day Geneva visit to address UNCTAD), I find this an unconvincing canonization (Dated October 10, 2009.)

 

The Sri Lankan government found his behaviour too noisy and did not renew his contract. Home is where you go when no one else will take you in.

 

Dayan went out on world première but meet his Waterloo. Expect that Dayan will return to pot-shot journalism again - putting out the names of Guevara, Gramsci, Marx and Nietzsche - in the hope that  some foreign source will resume giving him the cash he needs to continue amicably accommodating his wife Sara and mistress Tissaranee. These are the worries of the uneasy conscience of scammers and confidence tricksters of the times.
