The Global Financial Crisis marches on and we see growing uncertainty amongst financial commentators on where the world is headed. One thing they seem to agree on is, however, that those buying gold coins, will be positioned strongly when fiat paper currencies fail. In other words, here's another golden rule: he who holds the gold, rules.

Historically, a country that encourages its citizens to hold physical gold and itself hold enough in reserve to back its currency, will enjoy stability and prosperity. The example of King Charles Robert who reigned in Hungary 1310 -1342, is a case in point. When he ascended to the throne, Hungary was divided politically, socially and economically but due to his vision, King Robert turned Hungary into a financial & economic powerhouse.

In the late 1200's and early 1300's gold seams had been discovered, in the east of Hungary. In past history, kings would normally move landowners off their land where gold was discovered and have it extracted by slaves and it would automatically become the property of the Crown. However, King Robert set a revolutionary, international precedent by allowing the landowners to remain and brought in workers to mine it. From the gold that was mined, the landowners were permitted to keep one-third, while the other two-thirds went into the Treasury. In 1325 the King then introduced his 23.75 carat gold florin and with its introduction, he successfully curbed inflation and ushered in the Hungarian Gold Age. The florins soon became the primary currency of central Europe for the next 200 years and so began not only the recovery of Hungary but also the prosperity of Europe.

The reform of the currency and of the whole fiscal system greatly contributed to enrich the treasury and successfully proved King Robert's belief that if his people were wealthy, then Hungary would be wealthy. He was the first world ruler who did not have his own image imprinted on a coin and the first king not to debase by mixing lesser metals with the gold, which invites inflation.

Given the success of such reform, one wonders if the struggling nations could learn from Hungary today. China is now the world's largest consumer of gold and has not only lifted its bans prohibiting its people from owning the precious metal but has also implemented a program encouraging them to buy.

The difficulty is, however, that currently, there is less than one ounce of gold above the ground per person on the planet and supply is declining. Global output has been falling roughly one million ounces each year since the start of this decade. Given that this is so, plus China's growing demand that now surpasses India, the current price of gold at around $1400 an ounce, may in fact, be cheap.

Have lessons in Zimbabwe or Hungary been learnt? Buying gold coins that are of certified weight and purity, that are preferably, privately owned (as opposed to being purchased via a Mint), marked as a religious collectible and numbered, will set anyone in good stead for future financial security.
