There is hardly a child who does not immediately identify a picture of the young sailor boy and his dog with a box of Cracker Jacks. The free prize that it contained has delighted children for years. Cracker Jack brand has been an American favorite for more than 105 years. The delicious blend of caramel coated popcorn and peanuts is just as good today as it was when you were a kid.
It all began in 1872 when F.W. Rueckheim, a German immigrant who saved $200.00 by working on a farm near Chicago, came into the city to help with clean up from the great fire in 1871. He went into the popcorn business with a partner who had a small one popper stand. In 1873 Rueckheim bought out his partner and together with his brother Louis, formed F.W. Rueckheim & Bros. Two years later the bothers purchased candy making equipment and added marshmallows and other confections.
At the Chicago World Columbian Exposition in 1893, people from all over the world were treated to a unique confection made of popcorn, peanuts and molasses. However, one problem was that the candy coated kernels stuck together. In 1896 Louis perfected his process and Cracker Jack was born. Between the years 1894 and 1914 the demand for their confection continually increased.
In 1910 Cracker Jack boxes carried coupons which could be redeemed for premiums. Prizes were packed with Cracker Jack beginning in 1912. In 1916 a little sailor boy named Jack and his black and white dog, Bingo, began to appear and by 1919 became the familiar logo. Jack and Bingo have changed over the years, but they look substantially the same as they did in 1919. The firm was renamed The Cracker Jack Co. in 1922.
A prize committee evaluates prizes according to a formal selection procedure which determines their appropriateness to be placed in the same box with a food product, their safety and their appeal to children. Over the years prizes included spinning tops, 100s of charms, tin metal whistles, Cracker Jack Riddle booklets, small metal tools, postcards, baseball cards and presidential tokens.
The Cracker Jack Co. was bought out by several companies over the years. Cracker Jack is now one of the many products made by Frito-Lay, Inc. According to Frito Lay July 5th is Cracker Jack day.

State of Israel Coins Joshua Bronze Medal $181.09 In the Midrash it is told that four leading biblical personalities Abraham Joshua David and Mordechai had coins issued in their honor and through these coins each of them gained world renown. The word used by the Midrash for Coin is the word Monitin and interestingly this appears to be the root of the words Money Monnaie and Moneta that stem from Latin. In modern Hebrew the word Monitin denotes good reputation . The Midrash also describes the designs that appeared on each side of the coins. Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation has chosen to strike the coins described in the Midrash on medals. Art Students of the Emunah Academy for Women Jerusalem have been invited to submit designs and the winning designs have been chosen out of those submitted. First in the series was the Abraham and Sarah Medal that was introduced in our last promotion. This came in a Set Presentation Box designed to hold all the four medals in the series. Each of the medal versions of this medal are still available and the whole series may be ordered on a standing order basis. We now proudly present the Joshua Medal. The firstling of his herd grandeur is his and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox... is the blessing bestowed upon the Tribe of Joseph by Moses before his death. Joshua came from the Tribe of Ephraim the son of Joseph. These are the elements on the Joshua Coin described by the Mishnah. The ox signifies the strength of Joshua and the horns of the antelope his majesty and courage. Joshua was the leader who succeeded in his mission despite the hardships and quarrels of the people. In face of the enemy nevertheless he remained steadfast like the horns of the antelope . These two aspects of his personality are expressed on the two sides of the medal. Obverse:. The ox on the obverse side signifies the strength of Joshua. Joshua was the leader who succeeded in his mission despite the hardships and quarrels of the people. Reverse:.
