Coin collecting is one of the most popular hobbies that nearly anyone can engage in today. It attracts a wide variety of participants that range in age from 6 to 100 and covers all socioeconomic groups and nationalities. But what is the lure? What is it that attracts so many people to coin collecting?
For me at the tender age or 8 or 9 and receiving an allowance of only 25 cents a week, it was the fact that an old quarter, or any old coin, could be worth 3, 4, 5 or even more times its face value. I thought if I could find enough quarters that had sufficient value, I would certainly be on my way to wealth. I remember scanning the old Red Book coin guides to see if the coins in my collection were worth anything so I could cash them in.
For other more sophisticated collectors than a young boy, it can be a coin's historical value that is its popularity. Knowing that you are holding a silver dollar in your hands that may have been minted when Abraham Lincoln or Theodore Roosevelt was President or owning a coin from a famous collection is something many collectors seek out and treasure. And owning a coin from a country other than the one you live in, intrigues the collector into imagining who might have owned this coin minted somewhere on the other side of the world, possibly many years ago.
And then of course, there is the beauty of coin collecting. Finding a beautiful, rare specimen in uncirculated or MS condition is one of the biggest draws to owning coins. Seeing a coin with no scratches and no wear and knowing it is 100 years old or older, in many cases, is a lure that drives the antique seeker in nearly all of us.
Then there is the lure of gold coins. Gold has been a popular metal for hundreds or even thousands of years, but when minted into an extraordinarily beautiful coin like the $20 Gold Double Eagle designed by Augusts St Gaudens, it has a magnetism for the collector that is beyond compare. Owning one of these gems can be the centerpiece of a numismatists collection. Many a collector has paid thousands, hundreds of thousands or in some cases, millions of dollars for an exceptionally rare gold coin in near perfect condition.
Some of the more popular United States coins to look for are Lincoln wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, Morgan silver dollars, the most popular silver coin collected, Barber and Mercury dimes, Franklin and Washington quarters, Indian Head $5 gold coins and the previously mentioned $20 St Gaudens gold coins minted between 1907 and 1933. A 1933 St Gaudens $20 gold piece has the distinction, by the way, of being the single most valuable coin in the world.
One of the nice things about coin collecting is that you can get started even on a very small budget. Nice silver Washington quarters minted before 1965 can be had for under $5 and even some specimens of the more popular Morgan silver dollar can be found for as little as $15.
Coin collecting has intrigued many an enthusiast and has been a fun hobby and even a good investment for many generations. And being that coins come in all sizes, denominations, grades and values, nearly anyone can afford to start their own collection right now.
Alan LeStourgeon runs the US Coin Auctions Online web site where you can find Lincoln wheat cents, state quarters and other valuable United States coins to add to your collection.

Professional Coin Grading Service $103.56 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is a third party grading service for grading rare coins. It charges a fee for an opinion as to the condition and authenticity of each coin it grades to provide consumers with a rating on which to judge the coin, and encapsulates coins in sealed seethrough plastic holders. Such opinions are not universal and many PCGS coins are broken out of their holders by most major dealers at major coin shows. It was founded in 1986, and is located in Newport Beach, CA. It is a subsidiary of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT), a company that also operates a rare comic book certification service and a grader of paper money. PCGS claims it was founded in response to perceived inconsistencies in the appraisal of rare coins, however in truth PCGS can have little if any impact on coin appraisals since dealers base their appraisals on supply, demand and their inventory needs and surpluses. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 136 Publication Date: 2011/05/10 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.32 inches |

The Rare Coin Score $14         Parker, the ruthless antihero of Richard Stark’s eponymous mystery novels, is one of the most unforgettable characters in hardboiled noir. Lauded by critics for his taut realism, unapologetic amorality, and razor-sharp prose style—and adored by fans who turn each intoxicating page with increasing urgency—Stark is a master of crime writing, his books as influential as any in the genre. The University of Chicago Press has embarked on a project to return the early volumes of this series to print for a new generation of readers to discover—and become addicted to. This season’s offerings include volumes 7–9 in the series: The Seventh , The Handle , and The Rare Coin Score.             In The Seventh , the heist of a college football game goes bad, and the take is stolen by a crazed, violent amateur. Parker must outrun the cops—and the killer—to retrieve his cash.  In The Handle , Parker is enlisted by the mob to knock off an island casino guarded by speedboats and heavies, forty miles from the Texas coast .  The Rare Coin Score features the first appearance of Claire, who will steal Parker’s heister’s heart—while together they steal two million dollars of rare coins.   “Parker . . . lumbers through the pages of Richard Stark’s noir novels scattering dead bodies like peanut shells. . . . In a complex world [he] makes things simple.”—William Grimes, New York Times   “Whatever Stark writes, I read. He’s a stylist, a pro, and I thoroughly enjoy his attitude.”—Elmore Leonard   “Westlake knows precisely how to grab a reader, draw him or her into the story, and then slowly tighten his grip until escape is impossible.”— Washington Post Book World   “Donald Westlake’s Parker novels are among the small number of books I read over and over. Forget all that crap you’ve been telling yourself about War and Peace and Proust—these are the books you’ll want on that desert island.”—Lawrence Block   Also available from the University of Chicago Press: The Hunter The Man with the Getaway Face The Outfit The Mourner The Jugger The Score     |

Trust Is the Coin of Realm: (Paperback) $70.97 Following a new US administration entering office, and revision of strategies for international support to Afghanistan, this book fills an urgent gap in the debate on how to make a `bottom-up` approach to state-building work. Academic, press and policy accounts suggest the current `top-down` paradigm is inappropriate to the task; none, however, appears to offer the kind of rigorous insights necessary to understand why.Based on extensive field and archival research into the workings of `hawala` - an ancient financial system operating throughout the Muslim world which is accused of bankrolling the bulk of today`s terrorist operations, but is central to development in fragile states - this book shines a rare light on local-level institutions in Afghanistan and tribally controlled areas of neighbouring Pakistan.Important dynamics emerge around the legitimacy of externally-imposed change in complex humanitarian and stabilisation environments; the bargain of foreign aid and financial regulation; and the challenge of how to reconcile broad models of state-building with specific and unique contexts. Parties with the strongest hand are proven to be those typically considered to lie at the margins: they are most able to accrue legitimacy and, by association, the trust of the local population. The book indicates that the future reconstruction of Afghanistan hinges on whether the international community can engage genuinely with indigenous socio-economic networks like those of the `money-men`, for it is trust that emerges ultimately as the `coin of the realm`, not only in the money bazaar, but also against the backdrop of counter-insurgency and state-building efforts within the region. |
