As the lazy days at the beach, biking and hiking expeditions and roller skating at the park draw to a close with cooling weather, we all start to get into our preparations for the upcoming holiday season. When even people still considered to be in the 'middle class' are struggling with food and household expenses, we need to turn our attention to those less fortunate. Want to help others? Donating food is one of the best ways to do just that. You don't have to be plush with money to give this gift of life. Remember, every little bit helps!
A recent news report revealed that 1 in 7 people in the U.S. lives at, or below the poverty line! This is a higher percentage than ever previously recorded, when statistics began being collected in the late 1950s. Millions of children go to bed hungry, right here in the U.S. That's downright disgraceful.
Almost every community in the nation has a food bank to serve the poor. Donating food to food banks has been on a steady decline for the past couple of years. Perhaps with so many people who are having trouble making ends meet, potential food donors feel they have so little to donate, it will hardly make a difference. Don't adopt that mindset! As with any other endeavor, we need to take a step at a time, as a society. When we do, all those steps add up! If you can afford to donate a single can of food or bag of flour, do it! Think of the difference it would make if every family in your town was donating food in the most modest amounts.
You may have noticed a small article in your local newspaper, reporting that food banks are facing a crises. Some food banks are being forced to close their doors, because their shelves are empty. This should never happen in a society as rich in resources as ours. Many government programs are now slated for tremendous cutbacks in the so-called 'entitlement' programs, which affect children, the elderly and the poor most of all.
If the government is abandoning the poor, we, the citizens, should all take it upon ourselves to make certain that these vulnerable people in our immediate community have enough to eat. Donating food is one of the easiest of grass roots programs to get going.
Start in your own cupboard. Can you spare a few cans of food, a loaf of bread or some milk for those who are truly doing without? You might also organize your church, synagogue or mosque to sponsor a food drive in your neighborhood. This is also a great project for teen clubs. The larger grocery chains are often generous sponsors of food drives. Upscale restaurants are also enthusiastic participants and will sometimes offer to host community dinners to feed the poor.
Taking on such a project is rewarding indeed. You'll be able to anonymously help allay hunger and boost nutrition with this simple project of donating food in whatever venue proves most helpful in your community! Happy holidays to all!
