Survival Spanish For Travelers - First Lesson

You are about to embark on a Latin American adventure, traveling to cities that have one thing in common - the people all speak one language...Spanish. Your tickets and reservations are ready, your passport is in order, and now all that's missing is an effective method to learn Spanish fast. Since you will be traveling, some key Spanish phrases for travelers will come in handy. Your first stop is Mexico City; with its recently expanded airport it is now the largest in Latin America. As it is for millions of passengers every year, it will be your launching point for destinations further south. Of course being the most populous city on the planet and one of the first colonial capitals in the New World it has a lot to offer on its own. So, while you have those six hours to spare between connecting flights, a quick taxi ride to the historical center is in order.

As you enter the taxi a likely exchange with the driver would be:

Driver: Buenas tardes. / Good afternoon.

A donde desea ir? / Where do you wish to go?

You: Al Zocalo por favor. / To the Zocalo, please.

A 25 minute ride later you arrive to Mexico City's historical center, the Zocalo. A few more closing business pleasantries with the driver:

You: Cuanto es la tarifa? / What is the fare?

(In this instance the more informal phrase below might be appropriate)

Cuanto le debo? / How much do I owe you?

Driver: Cien pesos, senor/senora/senorita / One hundred pesos, sir/madam/miss.

You: Aqui tiene, quedese con el cambio. / Here you go, keep the change.

As you walk onto the street you see the vast square before you, the second largest public square in the world.

Only Red Square in Moscow is larger. You can enter the cathedral, the city museum, the old Presidential Palace and if you get thirsty there is even a Seven-Eleven housed on the ground floor of a 400-year-old building. Just like most of Latin America, Mexico City has a touch of the new within the classical framework of the past. Just remember, your flight leaves in 5 hours.

As you continue with your Latin American adventure, you depart Mexico City and arrive in Cancun. For the next three days you will be putting your Spanish for travelers to good use while basking on the white sands and under the glorious sunshine of the Mayan Riviera. As you stare out into the turquoise blue waters, you ponder over how important it is to prepare yourself linguistically for such a trip. How it is key to follow a system that can allow you to learn Spanish easily. So far on your trip the basic Spanish phrases that you have learned have made your life easier, such as when you were checking in at the hotel that afternoon:

Clerk: Buenas tardes, tiene una reservacion? / Good afternoon, do you have a reservation?

You: Si, mi nombre es Smith, John Smith. / Yes, my name is Smith, John Smith.

Mi numero de reservacion es cuatro-dos-siete-siete-seis. / My reservation number is 42776

Clerk: Si, es para una habitacion sencilla con vista al mar para 3 noches. / Yes, it's for a single room with an ocean-view for three nights.

Me firma el registro por favor. / Will sign the registry please.

Su habitacion estará en el septimo piso, numero setecientos veinte./ Your room will be on the seventh floor, number 720.

You: Muchas gracias. / Thank you very much.

Clerk: Que disfrute su estancia con nosotros. Por favor comuníquese a la recepcion para lo que se le ofrezca. / Enjoy your stay with us. Please call the front desk if there is anything you need.
